Dianne "Boots" Cloutier Anderson, our beloved Wife and Mother, passed into the loving arms of the Lord Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012. ^^Boots was born to Arendt Jasper Cloutier and Alva Dugstad Caroline on March 27, 1935, in Rochester, Minn. She was a loving mother to four and Nana to five grandchildren. She was a drum majorette and soloist at her church in high school. She married Roger Anderson, her sweetheart at Denfeld High, in Duluth in 1957 and enjoyed 55 years of family life traveling the world. They moved their family from Two Harbors near Duluth to White Bear Lake in 1961, after the birth of their first two children, Pam and Doug. Daughter Linda was born in White Bear Lake near St. Paul where they spent four years. Boots moved to Denver in 1964. The year 1966 brought a new richness to her life with the birth of daughter Julie. Boots also loved being close to her Aunt Fritzi and Fritzi's three kids who were literally just around the corner. In 1969 a move to Southern California brought the formation of many new friendships with the Griffins, Sharrs and many others that would endure the rest of her life. In 1972 she left SoCal for San Jose in Northern California where she continued to have an enormous impact on a new group of friends in the Montevideo neighborhood, where her kids attended church and school. The annual neighborhood Fourth of July parades were a family favorite. In 1977 came a new posting to The Old Dump Road in Hudson, Wis., so she wouldn't forget how to drive in the snow. She spent four years refining that skill and visiting frequently with in-laws, the Swensons, across the river in Minnesota. In January of 1981 came the first overseas adventure, when Boots and Rog and Julie moved to Brussels, Belgium. Boots loved the many varieties of chocolate, and afternoons on the Square with a glass of wine. She hosted her other three kids for a six-week European tour that visited the Von Trapp Family home in Switzerland and included a New Year's Eve celebration with the family in Paris that December. She and Rog spent many a weekend exploring that part of the world, including visiting cousins in Sweden, until 1985. Upon her return to the U.S. she moved to Fort Worth, where she was active as a buyer for the gift shop at a local hospital (since closed) here in Tarrant County. During her 29 years in Texas, she developed a new network of close friends while still maintaining close ties with all the folks she had influenced during her travels. She was active in her churches and joined the square dance group, the Happy Hoofers, who kept her hopping learning new dance steps! Boots and Rog continued to travel often, and an eight-day vacation to the British Virgin Isles with the Jacksons was a highlight for them both. Her final years were spent with her card club, book club, and church groups. ^^Dianne had the true gift of hospitality: she loved to cook, entertain and help others experience community and love. She wrote her own cookbook and nourished all of us in body, mind and soul. ^^Survivors: Husband, Roger Anderson; son, Douglas Anderson and wife, Linda; daughters, Pam Anderson Otto and husband, Bruce, Linda Anderson Little and husband, Dan, Julie Anderson Emmett and husband, Larry; mother, Alva Cloutier; brothers, Thomas Cloutier and wife, Sandy, John Cloutier and wife, Peggy; grandchildren, Brendon Otto, Chris Otto, Daniel Anderson-Little, Jacob Anderson-Little and Leah Anderson Little; and aunt, Fritzi Shonk. Byers, Marion Elizabeth
Marion Elizabeth Byers, 87, of Duluth, died Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2011, in Edgewood Vista Assisted Living in Hermantown. ^^Marion Elizabeth Jeanette Byers was the daughter of Italian immigrants James and Elizabeth Jeannette, the second youngest of 12 children, born March 12, 1924, in Duluth. That was the beginning of an epic story, the kind of life that is written about in family novels. ^^When Marion was very young, her future husband, Tony Byers, joined the Army during World War II and went overseas to fight the Nazis. Marion insisted on joining the war effort and traveled to the state of Washington to supervise a kitchen operation. When World War II ended, fortunately the world and Marion's beau were spared. ^^Marion and Tony were soon married and that's when things got busy. Marion went on to become the matriarch of her own 10 children, plus lots of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. ^^Marion's children were born in rapid succession, no more than a year or two apart. Mom worked tirelessly throughout her life from dawn to dusk, making breakfasts, school lunches and dinners, washing dishes, cleaning the house, washing and ironing clothes, helping the older kids with their schoolwork and changing diapers, because there were always babies in the house. (Dishwashers and pampers would come much later in Marion's child-rearing life). ^^This recurring theme would start all over again the next day and keep recurring for decades to come. Marion performed the same tasks for many of her grandchildren as well. It's no wonder that Mom was revered by her entire extended family. ^^Marion was all about values: she lived a life of perseverance, generosity, honesty, kindness and love of God. In another life, Marion would have been right up there with Mother Terese and Joan of Arc, taking care of the poor and fighting for the people of her country. These are lofty platitudes, but Marion was a very talented and capable woman, and for her, anything was possible. ^^Marion's real calling in life, however, was being a mother. Marion was passionate about her calling, as she had to be in order to cope with the rigors of her life. Occasionally, Marion would be overwhelmed by her responsibilities and her aches and pains. She would cry a bit, wipe her tears and then return to her passion - being a mom. Marion was always careful to love her children equally and promote their self-esteem. ^^When Mom would bark out her salty orders to raucous kids, she would temper it with kindness - a hug, a kiss, a pat on the head, one of her delicious rolls. As a result, she always had children and grandchildren hugging her legs while she washed dishes, tugging on her dress as she baked bread, or sitting on her lap when she would catch a quick break in a chair. You can't fool kids, they knew Mom was the real deal. ^^When it came to her children's' spouses, the same could be said, because Marion treated them all with open arms and never an unkind word. ^^As Marion's children got older and had actual conversations with her, they realized how wise and witty she really was. Whenever groups gathered, Marion was the center of attention with her glib remarks and hilarious one-liners. The good news is that Mom will be celebrating her first Christmas in heaven this year and all her soul-mates are in for a real treat. ^^She was preceded in death by her parents; 11 siblings; daughter Dianne Mullen in 1992; and her husband, Tony, in 1994. ^^Marion is survived by her children, Anthony (Peggy) of Plymouth, Minn., Tom (Sandee) of Bloomington, Minn., Bill (Lori Dennis) and Jerry (Jan Seaman), both of Duluth, Pam (Tom) Flood of Richfield, Minn., Jim (Liselle) of Boston, Mass., Rick of Blaine, Minn., Joe (Sue) of Duluth, and Mary Byers of Minneapolis; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and former daughter in-law Carolyn Byers Anderson. ^^VISITATION: 10 until the 11 am. Mass of Christian burial Tuesday, Dec. 27, in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. ^^Memorials directed to Cathedral Cares Fund, 2801 E. Fourth St., Duluth, MN 55812, would be appreciated. ^^Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth, (218) 727-3555. ^^

We’re in great shape.”^^His son Mike, who was a vice president and the face of the family-owned business, died of a heart attack in 2004 at age 46.^^His son Jim Jr., also a vice president, issued a statement Monday: “My dad was dedicated to our family, a great teacher, coach and cheerleader. He will be sorrowfully missed.”^^Miner’s Inc. has its roots in the 1943 opening of a small Grand Rapids tavern by Miner’s parents, Anton and Ida. The couple began selling milk and bread when they saw a market for the items. They later built the family’s first grocery store, Miner’s Market, along U.S. Highway 2.^^In 1954, the store was renamed Piggly Wiggly. The family opened a second store in Virginia in 1963 — which Jim Miner ran for several years before moving to Duluth, where the company had opened a third store in the Woodland neighborhood in 1965. Several more stores followed by 1975, when Tony and Ida Miner retired and Jim Miner became the company’s president.^^The next year — seeing the developing trend of bigger, warehouse-type supermarkets — he opened the company’s first such store in Cloquet. In 1977, the store was renamed Super One Foods — the first of many.^^The Miner family lived near the Woodland Piggly Wiggly then. And the whole family would regularly work at the store.^^“When I started, the other grocery stores weren’t open on Sundays, but our store was and all the family worked here on Sundays, including Jim Sr.,” recalled Mark Knudtson, who has worked in the store’s meat department for 26 years.^^They would work the register and stock the shelves, and Miner would carry out groceries, he said.^^Miner was a wonderful man and a generous man, Knudtson says.^^When Knudtson’s wife was hospitalized before his health insurance kicked in as a new employee, Miner had it started retroactive to the day Knudtson started work so that the hospital charges would be covered. When Knudtson needed a down payment for lake property he wanted to buy but the banks were closed, Miner loaned it to him “without batting an eye.”^^“He helped a lot of people in the community,” Knudtson said of Miner. “He did it on his own. He didn’t want people to know about it. He was just a good guy who liked to hunt and fish. He was never pretentious. He was the kind of guy you could sit down with and talk about anything. And he never looked down on anybody.”^^Miner’s love for the outdoors led to hunting adventures around the world. And joining him on many of them was Mike Seyfer of Duluth, who is married to one of Miner’s granddaughters.^^“His generosity to me fueled my passion for the outdoors,” Seyfer said. “And because of his generosity, I have been able to see and do things that I never would have been able to do without him. And I will have those memories the whole rest of my life.”^^The Hermantown-based company now owns 25 Super Ones, three U-Saves and the Woodland Marketplace Foods grocery stores. It has stores in four states, plus its wholesale operation in Duluth. Prevented by Minnesota law from selling spirits in grocery stores, the company recently bought two liquor stores, in Cloquet and Duluth. The company employs more than 2,400 people, and is one of Minnesota’s largest privately held supermarket owners.^^Always looking at expanding, in 2006 Miner’s bought seven Jubilee and Festival Foods stores, including five in the Twin Ports, increasing the company’s dominance of the Twin Ports retail grocery market. It bought a competitor in Hurley in 2009 and another in Wadena in 2010, and expanded existing stores across its chain.^^“It is a powerful story of how a family-run business can not only compete but thrive against national businesses and food chains,” said David Ross, president and CEO of the Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce. “It’s a testament not only to how he built the business, but how he developed his children into the thoughtful business leaders they became. Our community is fortunate to have had him as a community leader as well as a business leader.”^^Miner also helped new inventions and other businesses get off the ground.^^After Miner invested in a laser rangefinder for golf that Duluth businessman John Locker had invented, the two formed a company called Entrepreneur Venture Capital in 1992.^^“If we found something we liked, we would try to get it to market,” Locker said.^^One such investment led to a line of baby products that has been sold at Walmart stores for the past 16 years.^^“He was a great mentor and businessman, and I will dearly miss him,” Locker said. “He touched a lot of lives. People don’t know that. They think he was just in the grocery business. He was much more than a grocery man. That’s for sure.”^^The Miner family has been very charitable to the Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank, said Executive Director Shaye Moris.^^“He was a very humble man and they are a humble family, and they don’t really talk a lot about those contributions to community,” she said. “But they have been making them for many years.”^^In lieu of flowers, Miner’s family asks that memorials be made to the Damiano Center in Duluth, the Michael Miner Endowment Fund at Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.^^
