Leo A. Bachmann, 99, Duluth, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008 at Chris Jensen Health & Rehabilitation Center. He was born in St. Paul, to Joseph J. and Margueretha M. (Mugler) Bachmann on Oct. 2, 1908, the 10th of 11 children. Leo was employed by the State of Minnesota Department of Taxation, Duluth Branch, from the 1940's until his retirement in the 1970's. Leo was preceded in death by all his siblings, and by his wife, Gladys. He is survived by his daughter,Alice M. (Rolland) Fox of Reno, Nev.; three grandchildren, Cynthia J. Berg and Christopher (Lynne) Steele, both of St. Paul, and Ann-Marie (Kent) Anderson of Rocklin, Calif.; six great-grandchildren, Thomas Berg of St. Cloud, Minn., Rosalyn and Elizabeth Steele of St. Paul, and Michael, Jordan, and Christopher Anderson of Rocklin, Calif. VISITATION:10 a.m. Thursday until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Benedict's Catholic Church. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. Ball, Lois May
Lois May Ball, 73, Hermantown, passed away on Friday, Aug. 8, 2008 in Duluth. Lois was born June 4, 1935, in Pasadena, Calif., to Charles and Willadee Broadfoot. She married the love of her life, George A. Ball, a young Air Force fighter pilot in June, 1957. During his 30 year Air Force career, Lois lived throughout the United States and Europe while raising three children. Lt. Col. George Ball was eventually stationed in Duluth, and the Ball family put down roots in Askov, Minn. Here, Lois was very active in her community, church and schools. In 2000, Lois moved to Hermantown. She was preceded in death by her husband, George in 1986. Lois is survived by her three children, David (Donna) Ball, Leavenworth, Kan., Sandy (John) Carlson, Hermantown, and Kathy (James) White, Little Falls, Minn.; and her seven grandchildren, Rachel and Ben White, Zack and Nick Hoy, Courtney and Joel Carlson, and Will Perkowski. Blesener, Donald James "Jim"
Donald James ""Jim'' Blesener, 85, Duluth, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008 at Miller Dwan Medical Center. He was born in Duluth on Nov. 5, 1922 to Alfred P. and Clara H. (Kreisel) Blesener. Jim married Kathleen Butalla in Duluth on May 29, 1948. He was an Army Air Corp veteran of World War II. He worked as a sheet metal journeyman for DM&IR Railroad, Lester Peterson Sheet Metal, Walker Jamar Company, and A. W. Kettle. He also worked as a lineman for Great Lakes Towing Company, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Jim was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church and the Seafarers Union. He was very active with United Northern Sportsman's Club, and for many years was a gun safety instructor. Jim loved his family more than anything in the world. He loved spending time at the cabin, and in his yard with his flower and vegetable gardens. His flowers are gorgeous. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Barbara Jo Blesener in 1977; an infant son, Michael James in 1949; and Margie's special friend Bill Kainu. He is survived by his wife of 60 years Kathleen; his daughters, Gloria (Patrick) Phillips and Marjorie Hoder; his grandchildren, Brandon Phillips, Hope (Jeff) Austin-Phillips, Bradley Hoder and Ashley Hoder; his siblings, Audrey (Foster) McCormack, Cyril Blesener, Burnadette Roberts, Shirley Bryant, and Raymond (Phyllis) Blesener; and many nieces and nephews. VISITATION:5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, in Dougherty Funeral Home and continues Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Galeski, Robert John
Robert John Galeski, 85, Duluth, died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was born in Superior, Wis., on July 9, 1923 to Frank and Regina (Wozniak) Galeski. Bob lived most of his life in Duluth, graduating from Central High School in 1941. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Germany. Bob married Vivian Lund on July 20, 1948. He sold real estate and insurance until his retirement. Bob was a member of First Lutheran Church, a past president of the Duluth Board of Realtors, and the Duluth Credit Union. He played the clarinet in the Duluth Symphony and the Duluth City Band, and coached Little League Baseball for many years. Bob is survived by his wife of 60 years, Vivian; sons, Michael K. of Shoreview, Minn., and Paul ""Chip'' (Linda) of Duluth; a sister, Elizabeth ""Bette'' Kinghorn of Yukon, Okla.; two grandchildren, Sara (Rob) Haveri and Jennifer (Josh) Bartel; and one great-grandson, Logan Haveri. Magie, Lucille McNally
Lucille McNally Magie, 100, of Duluth passed away Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008 at Heritage Assisted Living Residence in Duluth. Lucille was born on June 24, 1908 in Scanlon, Minn., to Minnie Ellen and John H. McNally. She graduated from Central High School in 1926 and is the oldest living graduate of St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing. She was recently honored by the College of St. Scholastica Nursing School for that accomplishment. Lucille was also distinguished as one of the oldest students at the University for Seniors at UMD. She was an active member in the University for Seniors Continuing education, taking a variety of courses that interested her and satisfying her appetite for learning. Lucille enjoyed participating in the Duluth Public Schools as a reading volunteer; she contributed at Lowell School, Chester Park and other elementary buildings in the district. For approximately 50 years, Lucille practiced her nursing career in both Hibbing and Duluth and was most dedicated and committed to her patients and her nursing supervisory positions she held in the area hospitals. As a young child her goal in life was to be a Registered Nurse allowing her to help people in need and she did it well. Lucille lived most or her life residing in Duluth, Hibbing, Minn., and Lower Eau Claire Lake, Barns, Wis. She loved gardening in her free time, fishing for Salmon in Alaska, having company in her home and cabin and most of all adored her five children, sons-in-law and daughter-in-law, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Lucille also cared for her dogs and cats as they were her companions too. After 53 years of marriage Lucille was preceded in death by her husband, William Henry Magie in 1982. She is survived by her son, William ""Pat'' (Deborah) Magie of Honolulu, Hawaii; daughters, Sally (Donald) Hultstrand of Richland, Mich., Katherine (Gerald) Calengor of Plymouth, Minn., Joan McMillan of Edina, Minn., and Susan (Gary) Berggren of Duluth; 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; one sister, Kathryn Madden of Arizona and her brother, James McNally of Florida. VISITATION:12 noon with services at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Glen Avon Presbyterian Church, 2105 Woodland Ave. Duluth. This organization was started in 1983 and has provided many physically and mentally challenged people to enjoy camping in the wilderness. For many years Lucille supported her husband William H. Pearl S. Ostroviak, 83, of Duluth, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008 at Edgewood Vista, formerly of 7th Ave E. She was born Oct. 14, 1924 in Duluth to Leo and Tillie (Bergal) Lees. She was a lifetime resident of Duluth. She married Benjamin Ostroviak and was a homemaker. Pearl enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, baking and spending time with her family. She also loved her dogs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin in 1996. Pearl is survived by her daughter, Judith (Gerald) Cohen; sister, Ida Lees both of Duluth; two grandchildren, Joseph (Tina) Cohen of Chisholm, Minn., and Shawn (Chris Geboe) Cohen of Duluth; and two great-grandchildren, Brandon and Beyonce Cohen; and many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
