Thomas Edward Atol, 47, of Duluth died Saturday, July 17, 2010, at St. Mary’s Medical Center.^^He was raised in Duluth and graduated from Duluth East High School. Tom attended Duluth Vocational Tech. At an early age he started working at Arrow-head Fireworks Company Inc. The company originally was started by his grandfather, run by his father, Warren, and currently run by Tom.^^Tom was currently the fire chief for the Gnesen Volunteer Fire Department, and a member of the Civil Air Patrol. A true outdoorsman, Tom enjoyed camping, fishing, flying, and most of all, his work.^^Tom was preceded in death by his father, Warren, and by his mother, Patricia.^^Tom is survived by his wife, DeDee, his son, David, his daughters, Casey and Anna, and his granddaughter, Brooke, all of Duluth; his sister, Patty Kripitz of Las Vegas; his nieces, Stephanie, Amy and Kristine; and many other close family members.^^VISITATION: Friends may gather Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service at Dougherty Funeral Home. Baker, Ray
Ray Baker, 91, of Duluth, passed away Thursday, July 1, 2010, in St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth. ^^He was born June 20, 1919, to August and Ida Baker. He was a life long resident of Duluth. Ray married Virginia M. Polson April 16, 1955, and had two children, Julie and Jim. ^^Ray served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II from July of 1942 until April of 1946. He participated in the initial occupation of Japan and received the Good Conduct Ribbon and World War II Victory Medal. He owned and operated Baker Trucking and Baker Sand and Gravel with his brother Walter Baker and then his wife Virginia Baker. ^^One of his favorite places to go was his family's cabin located on Little Grand Lake where he enjoyed playing cards and laying in the summer sun. Ray was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who deeply loved his family and was actively involved in all areas of their lives. Birkland, Roger Olav Nelson
Roger Olav Nelson Birkland, of Duluth, died July 12, 2010, in Solvay Hospice House after fighting colorectal cancer for three years. ^^Roger was born April 13, 1947, to Vernon and Joan (Aubin) Birkland in Hibbing. ^^Roger attended Holy Rosary grade school, Cathedral High School, and U.M.D. He was ordained to the Deaconate of the Dioceses of Duluth. Roger was a gifted salesman, he sold insurance, windows and siding, and his love of God. Roger served 20 years as deacon in the Catholic Church at Cathedral of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, was an administrator at the Center City parishes, and most recently at St John’s Woodland and St Joseph’s Gnesen. People who heard his homilies were motivated by his word and interpretation of the gospel. Roger was also very active in the Blessed Nuno society, inspiring the construction of an orphanage in Agua Prieta, Mexico. As an AA member, Roger achieved 30 years of sobriety this past January. ^^As a member of the Ridgeview County Club for 20 years, Roger excelled in his favorite sport of golf. His favorite golf partner was his grandson Nicholas. Roger also cherished his afternoons spent on Fish Lake with family on the pontoon. ^^Roger was preceded in death by his parents; brother David; and in-laws Walter and Helen Chesney. ^^He is survived by his wife Sharon (Chesney) of 41 years; children, Dustin (Mandy) Birkland and Stacia (Josh) Grooters; his adored grandchildren, Nicholas, CaenCole, Cameron, Tyler, Zachary and Lillian; brothers and sisters, Arthur Birkland, Elizabeth Birkland, Martha (Mark) Klein and Kevin (Kim) Birkland; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and beloved friends. ^^His family is forever grateful for the care provided by the Solvay House staff. ^^Roger will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and the Catholic community. Marie H. Blick, 86, of Duluth, died Tuesday, June 22, 2010, in Chris Jensen. ^^Marie was born March 25, 1924, in Duluth to Edwin and Alice McEntee. She was a Duluth Central graduate. Marie lived for many years in San Francisco. She worked as an assistant buyer for Macy’s, and then she provided day care for toddlers. Marie returned to Duluth in 1982. ^^She was a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Church. Cieluch, Wallace "Wally" T.
Wallace “Wally” T. Cieluch, 87, of Duluth passed away Friday, June 18, 2010, in Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center.^^He was born Nov. 20, 1922, in Duluth to Walter and Helen (Switala) Cieluch. Wally graduated from Duluth Central High School. He married his best friend, Angeline Zelefski, on Oct. 14, 1945. They lived on Caribou Lake for many years before moving back to Duluth. He worked for Graybar Electric, Commonwealth Electric in Silver Bay and retired from downtown Ace Hardware. Wally was a drummer for many years, enjoying polka music with the band Polka Dots. He loved cars, dogs and enjoyed keeping a pristine lawn and planting flowers with his wife. He collected pens and baseball caps. Craig, Marian "Jo"
Marian “Jo” Craig, 88, was welcomed into heaven June 4, 2010, while surrounded by family at her daughter’s home.^^Jo was born March 24, 1922, to William Louis and Hannah Amelia (Billings) Raetz in Remsen, Iowa. Jo grew up on a farm and was one of four sisters. She was a school teacher in Iowa for a short time, then moved to St. Paul where she met her husband, Jim. Jim and Jo were married June 21, 1947, and had two children, Jim and Julie. The family moved to Duluth in 1966. Jo was a devoted and loving wife to Jim for 34 years. She faithfully cared for him in their home when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor until his passing in 1981.^^Jo loved Duluth. She was very active and enjoyed walks and cross-country skiing in the winter. Jo often said there was nothing better than “Duluth ice water.” Jo was an incredibly friendly person. She would talk to anyone, anytime and about anything. She got to know her neighbors on East First Street well, and they were very special to her. Jo loved to watch the U.M.D. Bulldogs men’s hockey team play and was a longtime season ticket holder. She volunteered for years at St. Mary’s and with Meal-on-Wheels.^^Jo was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.^^More than anything Jo loved to spend time with her family. She was the best grandma and Mor Mor to her grandchildren. She made wonderful family meals and baked treats. In her later years, Jo developed Alzheimer’s, which she battled until her passing. She was a very loving and very loved women.^^She was preceded in death by her husband, James Russell Craig; her parents; and her sister Dorothy Brown.^^Jo is survived by her son James W. Gagne, Donald J.
Donald J. Gagne, 72, of Punta Gorda, Fla., formerly of Duluth, died unexpectedly Tuesday, June 16, 2010, in the “outdoor office” at his summer home in Makinen. ^^Don was born Jan. 11, 1938, in Duluth, to Clifford and Magdaline Gagne. He attended Denfeld and graduated from Duluth Central High School. Don married Linda Jacobsen in Duluth on Dec. 30, 1960. He retired from the city of Duluth’s department of water and gas in 1992 after 35 years of service. Don also worked with his dad at the Duluth Arena Auditorium as a stage hand. ^^He was a former member of St. Jean’s Catholic Church. An avid NASCAR fan, especially Dale Earnhardt No. 3, Don was a member of the Punta Gorda Elks; original member of the “Black Hats”; and co-founder of Lake Superior Steelhead Association. Don loved the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman, loved deer hunting, golfing (was a ranger in Florida), minnow trapping and tapping trees for maple syrup; cutting and splitting wood for his outdoor office (the sauna); and spending time at the cabin on Linwood Lake. ^^Don enjoyed his friends in Markham, Palo and Florida; every morning at home in Makinen, friends would start stopping by at 6:15 a.m. for coffee and to shoot the breeze. Don will be greatly missed. ^^He was preceded in death by his father, Clifford; mother, Magdaline; step-father, Herman Fostoff; and sisters, Delores Wait and Elaine Leischke. ^^Don is survived by his wife, Linda; sons, Kevin (Sheila Buchheit) of Canosia Township and Dean of Duluth; grandchildren, Baley and Trevor; and many, many great friends. ^^VISITATION: 9 until the 11 a.m. service Friday in Dougherty Funeral Home. Heaney, Judge Gerald W.
Judge Gerald W. Heaney entered eternal life on the morning of June 22, 2010. ^^He was born on January 29, 1918, in Goodhue, Minn., to William J. and Josephine (Ryan) Heaney. ^^While growing up in Goodhue, his father instilled in young Gerald a strong work ethic. ^^Before World War II broke out, the young law school graduate met and fell in love with Eleanor Rose Schmitt, a lovely woman who would become his wife. After Pearl Harbor was attacked, he volunteered with the 2nd Ranger Battalion. As a lieutenant, he led his unit ashore at Omaha Beach in Normandy on D-Day, earning the Silver Star medal, and then fought across Europe under General Patton. ^^In October of 1945, he returned home from the war. On December 1, he married Eleanor Rose Schmitt, and in January, they moved to Duluth, a city he would love till his death. ^^As a Federal Judge, he had the honor of being mentor, friend and teacher to two generations of bright, gifted law clerks. He led by example, never asking more of his clerks than he would have done himself. He not only taught the young clerks, but also became a living testimony for volunteerism. Through his actions, he shared many values: not letting achievement go to your head, instead giving credit to others around you; and being a steadfast advocate for what you think is right. ^^Gerald W. Heaney treasured his greatest titles - that of husband, father and grandfather. At any family gathering or political picnic, he would be surrounded by children. He and Orville Freeman owned a small cabin on a secluded lake in Canada. Some of our best memories were spent fishing with the Judge, a name he was affectionately called by friends, family and associates alike. ^^The Judge and Eleanor were faithful Minnesota Twins fans. Even to his last day, he and Eleanor faithfully sat by the TV watching their Twins. They were also ardent UMD Bulldogs hockey fans, rarely missing a hockey game, especially when UMD played the southern campus. ^^Besides his parents, the Judge was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters. ^^He is survived by Eleanor Rose, his beloved companion, best friend and wife of 65 years; his sister Elizabeth Majerus; his son William Matthew (Terri), and his daughter Carol Jean McPherson-Heaney; his grandchildren Marcy Jean Rees, John (Kay) Stamos, Matthew (Cristi) Heaney, Kelly (Patrick) Cossor, Erin (Steve) Buss, and Meghan (Silas) Binkley; and nine and one-half great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. ^^The family sends heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Benedictine Health Center; and to Randy of Northern Access - everyone cared for the Judge as if he were one of their own. Mark, Freda B.
Freda B. Mark, 95, of Huntington Beach, Calif., died Sunday, July 18, 2010, in Sunrise Senior Living in Huntington Beach.^^She was born Aug. 8, 1914, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, to Alexander and Elizabeth Bergal.^^When she was a young child, Freda and her family moved to Duluth. After graduation from Duluth Central High School, Freda moved to Chicago, where she met and married Ralph Kurson. They had two daughters, Joyce of Baltimore and Judith of Huntington Beach. Ralph passed away in 1967, and Freda moved to Phoenix to help her brother Phil care for their father. In 1971 she met Max Mark and they married. They were married for 20 years before Max died. Prior to his death they moved to Laguna Hills, Calif., where she lived until 2007.^^Freda, also known as Fritzi, was a voracious reader and read the L.A. Times cover to cover on a daily basis. Her quest for knowledge never ended as she read books on Judaism, travel and a variety of other topics. She loved to play bridge and was a member of a weekly bridge group until about 10 years ago.^^In 2002 she was re-united with Phil Myzel while attending a family party in Duluth. In fact, it was her brother Harry who told Phil that she would be at the party. Phil crashed the party, threw his arms around Freda and planted a huge kiss on her lips. They were apart for only short periods of time during the following years, despite her returning to California. Their relationship was filled with joy, not only for them, but also for friends and family.^^She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Phillip (Mary) and Harry (Ruth); and her son-in-law, Ira.^^Freda is survived by her daughters Joyce (Michael) and Judith; grandchildren Andrew (Leah), Gregory (Catherine) and Elizabeth Ordun, Robin (David) Baroway and Jeffrey Sobel; great-granddaughters Sarah and Rachel Baroway; and the children of her brother Phil, Phyllis (Wary) Shoemaker and Mervin (Doris) Bergal. George Walter Mausolf, age 86, of Kenwood Avenue and formerly of East Skyline Parkway, died Saturday, July 17, 2010, in the Benedictine Health Center. ^^He was born in Duluth on Sept. 1, 1923, to Anton and Hazel Mausolf. ^^George married Patricia Mary Rapue on June 21, 1958, in Duluth. George worked in the pre-design department at the Minnesota Highway Department, retiring after more than 30 years of service. ^^He was a former member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. George enjoyed photography, building model airplanes, the outdoors, sunshine and trips to Arizona. Anne B. Mehle, 89, of Duluth, died Monday, July 26, 2010, in St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth. ^^Anne Bernadette Drobnich was born Aug. 15, 1920, in Chisholm, the daughter of Louis and Teresa (Lah) Drobnich. ^^She grew up and attended and graduated from Chisholm High School in 1938. She married Frank A. Mehle Dec. 27, 1940. They moved to Williams Field, Ariz., where she was a CAF 2. They returned to Duluth and she later was a clerk at Plets Grocery for 16 years. ^^She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Woodland and its Rosary Society, Rice Lake Plus 55 Club, Noontime Homemaker’s Club and was a volunteer at Benedictine Daisy Shop. Michelizzi, Toni Marie
Toni Marie Michelizzi, 19, of Duluth, died Tuesday, July 13, 2010, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. ^^She was born Dec. 9, 1990, in Duluth to John A. and Diane M. (Nelson) Michelizzi. ^^Toni had been a Girl Scout, a member of the YWCA Girl Power and a member of Central High School’s choir. She was a 2009 graduate of Duluth Central High School and currently a student at Lake Superior College. She was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church. Toni enjoyed music, movies and being with her family and friends. She enjoyed playing board games with her mom, and like her dad and grandfather, she wrote poetry. ^^She enjoyed the family reunions at Itasca State Park every year, as well as the family reunions at Enger Park. She loved her family dog Macy. Toni was beautiful inside and out; soft spoken and gentle. Olson, Clifford Monrad
Clifford Monrad Olson, 88, of St. Marie Street, died Sunday, July 25, 2010, with his grandson by his side. ^^He was born Aug. 29, 1921, to Gustave and Esther (Pietz) Olson in Duluth. ^^Cliff graduated from Central High School he was a Army Air Corps Veteran of World War II. Following his service to country he returned to Duluth and was employed with Northwestern Bell as a telephone central office switchman for 37 years, retiring in 1985. ^^Cliff was a member of V.F.W. No. 137, past post commander, quartermaster for seven years, Central Hillside Community Club life member and past Scout Master. Pilon, Richard Charles
Richard Charles Pilon, of Duluth, died Thursday, July 15, 2010. ^^He was born June 3, 1933, in Duluth, to Roland and Marie Pilon. ^^Dick attended St. Jean’s School and Duluth Cathedral. He served in the Korean War from 1953-55. In 1957, he married Janice Baker and they have been inseparable for the past 53 years. ^^Dick owned and operated Kenwood Skelly, worked for Metro Chrysler and Twin Ports Paper. ^^Dick loved spending time with his eight children and treasured grandchildren. He enjoyed coaching his sons’ basketball teams, snowmobiling and camping. Later, Dick and Jan bought a RV and became snowbirds, traveling to Florida for several winters. ^^He was preceded in death by Parents Roland and Marie Pilon. ^^Dick is survived by his devoted wife Janice; his eight children, Terri (Loren) Middleton, Kim (Larry) Tessier, Debbie (Paul) Laskowski, Craig (Jennifer) Pilon, Michael (Pamela) Pilon, Mark (Amanda) Pilon, Kristin Pilon and Tim Pilon. He was the proud grandfather of 16 grandchildren and one great-grandson. Pleban, Josephine "Babe" L.
Josephine “Babe” L. Pleban, 90, of Duluth, died Thursday, July 15, 2010, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. ^^Babe was born Jan. 22, 1920 in Eveleth to Oresti and Frances Motti. ^^She was a graduate of Eveleth High School and she then married John “Connie” Pleban and they moved to Duluth in 1955. ^^Babe worked for many years at Harry Allenfalls, retiring in 1984. She was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary, the Duluth Woman’s Club, where she liked to play Bridge, and was a former member of Ridgeview Country Club. ^^She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband Connie in 2001. ^^Babe is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. Ridder, Cornelius "Neal"
Cornelius “Neal” Ridder, of Duluth, passed away Thursday, June, 10, 2010, in the Minnesota Veterans Home in Silver Bay. ^^Neal was born Oct. 26, 1917, in Callaway, Neb., to Henry and Arminta Ridder. His mother was widowed with seven children when Neal was 11 years old and he was the second oldest, so he learned at a very young age the value of hard work. ^^Neal graduated from Callaway High School. He helped his uncle on the ranch for a few years, and then worked in the California ship yards until he was drafted into the Army. He was stationed at Dakar, Africa, until his discharge. ^^After his discharge, he decided to farm in South Dakota, where he met his bride-to-be, Angella “Angie” Seiler. They were married September 18, 1948, and they had four children: Anita, Brenda, Claudia and Dale. ^^Neal was an avid hunter, he loved bowling and was a member of the Jack Mead Gun Club for years. He brought home many trophies for both bowling and trap shooting. ^^Neal was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Duluth Heights, its Knights of Columbus and Plus 55 club. He was also a member of the American Legion and Carpenters local 361. ^^Neal was an excellent carpenter; he remodeled the home his family lived in. He was also foreman for Johnson Bros. Co., Cargill and American Bridge. ^^Neal was so loved by his family. They all agree he was the world’s best father and will be greatly missed. ^^He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Theodore, Francis, Donald and James. ^^Neal is survived by his wife of 62 years, Angie; three daughters and a son, Anita (Dwight) Flatt of Solway, Minn., Brenda (Mike) Keenan and Claudia (Jim) Hepsley, both of Duluth, and Dale (Ann) Ridder of Ham Lake, Minn.; grandchildren, Christopher, Michelle, Rachel and Erin; and great-grandchildren, Austin, Caleb and Gabrielle, and two more on the way. ^^VISITATION: 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 15, with Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Duluth Heights, on the corner of Ebony Avenue and Linden Street. Ruth, Norman Leo
Norman Leo Ruth, of Hermantown, died of heart complications at St. Mary's Hospital on June 19, 2010, in Duluth. ^^Norm graduated from Hermantown High School in 1963; and UMD in 1971. He was an athletic trainer at UMD, taught PhyEd at Proctor and Hermantown Schools, but ultimately chose the construction industry to work most of life retiring from Northland Constructors Inc. after 27 years of service, in January 2010. After retiring he enjoyed biking down to the Haines Road job to check on the guys and the job and to share a few laughs. Norm also served in the Army National guard. He met his wife Jeanne Sizer in 1973 and was married May 4, 1974, in Hermantown. They were planning on doing more camping, golfing, traveling to Vegas and taking their children and grandchild to Disney World in two years. Norm bowled most of his life and loved the game. He especially liked bowling with son Ryan and beating him whenever and wherever he could. They were very competitive but always had a great time. After retiring Norm would go over to Chris Jensen Nursing home every morning at 9 a.m. to visit with his mom and play a rousing game or two of cribbage. They were perfectly matched and the wins and losses were shared with good humor. He was a fanatic fan of the Twins and more specifically, Joe Mauer, "his boy". He did get to see a game at the new Target Center with family in May - a dream come true. He had a special love in his heart for his 4-year-old grandson, Alex, and enjoyed spending time with him, riding in his truck and playing the "Tequila" song while Alex car-danced and sang! ^^He is preceded in death by his father, Leo Ruth, and step-father, Oren Heilman. ^^His is survived by his wife, Jeanne; son Ryan (Andrea); grandson, Alex; Mother Margaret (Ruth) Heilman, Duluth; twin sister, Linda (Herb) Wenkel, Mankato, Minn.; sister Phyllis (Ray) Gielarowski, Palmer, Alaska; and may cousins, nieces and nephews. ^^VISITATION: 6-8 p.m. Tuesday in the Dougherty Funeral Home. Salgy Jr., Bruce John
Bruce John Salgy Jr., 26, died Saturday, June 26, 2010. ^^He was born Dec. 11, 1983, in Cloquet to Bruce J. and Renee C. (Altringer) Salgy Sr. Bruce worked as an auto mechanic. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, camping, baseball and working on cars and small engines. ^^He was preceded in death by his grandparents Frank and Palma Salgy; and his uncle William Altringer. ^^Bruce is survived by his mother Renee Altringer of Moose Lake; his father Bruce J. (Mary) Salgy Sr. of Meadowlands; his brothers, Brandon (Aimee) Salgy of Pequot Lakes, Minn., Jesse Welsh of Duluth and Daniel Schrock of Detroit Lakes, Minn.; his sisters, Nicole (Bradford) Goodell of Two Harbors and Vania Swanson of Seattle, Wash.; his maternal grandmother Constance Hopp of Carlton; his fiancée Kathi of Pierz; four sons; two daughters; his favorite nephew Orrion Solberg; his dear friend Walter Solberg of Duluth; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Saline, Wallace Peter "Wally"
Wallace Peter “Wally” Saline, 63, of Duluth, died and went to the Lord after a long battle with COPD Thursday, July 8, 2010, in St. Mary’s Medical Center Hospice. ^^He was born in Duluth to Arvid E. and Jean V. Saline Sept. 14, 1946. He graduated from Duluth East High School and attended Salter for welding school. Wally worked for Clyde Iron Works and then went to Alaska to work on the Alaskan North Slope pipeline in Prudhoe Bay. He also spent time in Japan on a work assignment. Wally decided he liked Alaska and stayed for 30 years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and gold mining in the off-season. Sandquist, Lauren A. "Sandy"
Lauren A. "Sandy" Sandquist, 76, of Duluth, died Tuesday, July 6, 2010, in his home. ^^He was born Oct. 28, 1933, in Duluth to Egan and Esther (Melin) Sandquist. Lauren was employed as a disc jockey for several years with WEBC radio and was the first sports announcer for WDIO-TV in Duluth. He returned to radio working with various stations throughout his career. Following his retirement from the media industry, he worked at the YMCA in Duluth. ^^He was an avid golfer and has his name in Enger Park Golf Coarse for his accomplishments. ^^He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister Betty Malknecht. ^^He is survived by his children, Janine Christensen of Parker, Colo., Gary Sandquist of Minneapolis, Pam Bibelheimer of Cathay, N.D. and Laurie Pentland of Deerlodge, Mont.; sister Donna DeChambeau of Barnes, Wis.; grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. ^^SERVICE: to be held at a later date. Rhonda Lea Scinocca, 49, of Duluth, died Sunday, July 11, 2010, in her home. ^^Rhonda was born July 20, 1960, in Duluth, to Joe and Sylvia “Dolly” Scinocca. ^^She graduated from Duluth Central High School and had worked as a certified nursing assistant at Chris Jensen and Lakeshore Lutheran Home. Rhonda loved working with elderly people, children and animals, especially dogs. Tutle, Sister Mary Jean
Sister Mary Jean Tuttle, OSB, 86, died Sunday, June 6, 2010, in Benet Hall in St. Scholastica Monastery. ^^She was born Nov. 29, 1923, in Grand Forks, N.D., where she attended St. Michael's Elementary School and Grand Central High School. She earned a B.A. from The College of St. Scholastica with a music major and minors in English and French, an M.A. in Theology from St. John's School of Theology, Collegeville, Minn., an M.M.Ed. degree in music education from the University of North Dakota, and an M.A. in communications from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Other studies included music at Northwestern University, psychology and education at the University of Minnesota Duluth, French at Kansas State University, and music education at the Peabody Conservatory at John Hopkins, Baltimore, Md. ^^Sister Mary Jean entered the Duluth Benedictine community Jan. 4, 1943, and professed her monastic vows July 11, 1944. She celebrated her Silver Jubilee Aug. 12, 1969, her Golden Jubilee July 10, 1994, and her Diamond Jubilee Aug. 8, 2004. She taught elementary grades at St. Timothy's in Chicago, Ill., St. Francis in Brainerd, Minn., and St. Anthony's and Sacred Heart Schools in Duluth. Later she taught at Cathedral High School in Duluth and, for a year, at Gerard High School in Phoenix, Ariz. Finally, she joined the faculty at The College of St. Scholastica as assistant professor of music and communication. In 1999 she received the Max H. Lavine Award for Teaching Excellence and in 2000 the Sister Timothy Kirby Benedictine Spirit Award. ^^In addition to her professional work, she was a member of the Monastery's schola and was a member of Pax Christi, an international society for the promotion of peace and justice. ^^Sister Mary Jean was preceded in death by her parents Jess and Grace (Carroll) Tuttle; brother Robert; and sister Grace (Tuttle) Steinbar. ^^In addition to the Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery, she is survived by her brother Donald; sister, Marguerite (Tuttle) Carlson; and many nieces, nephews and friends. ^^WAKE SERVICE: 9:30 a.m. with visitation until 10:45 a.m. Monday in Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel, St. Scholastica Monastery, followed by Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. with Father William Graham presiding.
