Victoria Georgene Abrahamson, 87, of Duluth, died Monday, Feb. 1, 2010 at St. Luke's Hospital. ^^She was born in Duluth on Nov. 1, 1922 to Chester and Mary Jakubek. ^^Victoria was a homemaker. Ballou, Jane Marcella
Jane Marcella Ballou of Duluth/Superior passed away Feb. 2, 2010. ^^She was born Feb. 8, 1962 in Superior, Wis., to Howard and Maryjane (Nelson) Johnson. ^^She married Jeffrey Blake Ballou in 1980. Jane was diagnosed with breast cancer originally in 1999, and again in 2008. She died from complications of this disease. ^^Jane attended school in Superior, first Nelson Dewey Elementary, then East Junior and graduated from SSHS in 1980. She has been a member of the Twin Ports Baha'i Community since 1985 where she served as an Assistant to the Auxiliary Board of the Baha'is of the United States for many years. She is a member of the Local Spiritual Assembly of Duluth, as well as the Adult Coordinator of the Twin Ports Baha'i Youth Workshop, a youth dance troupe that performed locally from 1999 - 2003. Jane also chaperoned service trips to South Dakota and Arizona for the youth. ^^Jane worked for Cohen Enterprises for many years, first at The Library/Zona Rosa Restaurants in Superior, and later at the company's corporate office with Photo Star Studios and Photo Tecnic. She later worked at the Bella Vita Restaurant in Duluth. ^^In 1998 Jane became Job Placement Coordinator and eventually Program Manager for the Opportunities Cooking Program at the Damiano Center in Duluth. In 2001 she was hired by ISD 709 as a Technical Tutor in Culinary Arts for the innovative 8th grade Collaborative Program at the Secondary Technical Center. In 2002 she became a Culinary Arts Instructor at this school, a position she held until her death. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Career and Technical Education from Bemidji State University, and is a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. Jane was given the Outstanding Career and Technical Education instructor award from the Minnesota Association for Career & Technical Administrators in 2007. ^^Jane is survived by her husband, Jeffrey; two sons, the lights of her life, Jaron (Katie) and Collin; a dear step-daughter, and best friend, Carolyn (Mark) Kassebaum; two precious granddaughters, Kylee and Grace Kassebaum; a very special brother, James (Amy) and his dear family; her dearest father-in-law, Robert Ballou; step-daughter, Allison Ballou; brothers, Randy and Jeff (Michelle); and sisters-in-law, Joy (Jim) Ballou Jantzen and Becky (Ken) Ballou Buck; as well as nine nephews, six nieces, one great nephew and two great nieces. ^^VISITATION: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday in the Dougherty Funeral Home. Binsfield, James M
James M. Binsfield, 73, of Duluth and Madeline Island died Friday, Feb. 26, 2010, at the Solvay Hospice House in Duluth surrounded by family.^^He was born in Ashland, Wis., on July 19, 1936, to Paul and Loretta Binsfield.^^He was a graduate of St. Mary’s University in Winona, Minn.^^James owned Binsfield & Associates, an insurance and investment firm, for 32 years and was well respected in his field.^^He was an avid golfer and traveler but his main joy in life was being in his boat on Lake Superior as well as spending time at his home on Madeline Island where he grew up as a child.^^He was a member of Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary.^^He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Paul and a sister, Betty Morgan.^^Survivors include his wife, Margo; his five sons, Christopher of Minneapolis; Craig, Curt (Shelly), Cory and Chad (Xiomara) all of Duluth and eleven grandchildren, Brittany, Brooke, Madison, Noah, Dylan, Sydney, Morgan, Sophia, Connor, Lilly and Grethell.^^A special thanks to the staff of the Solvay Hospice House for the love and care shown to Jim and our family.^^Memorials are preferred to the Salvation Army or the Damiano Center.^^A Mass of Christian Burial: will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary. Beverly A. (Sorum) Melby Carey, 81, of Duluth, died Monday, Feb. 1, 2010 at Grand Village Nursing Home in Grand Rapids, Minn. ^^She was born Feb.24, 1928 in Willmar, Minn., to Sophus and Elma (Olson) Sorum. ^^She married Leonard Melby on June 12, 1949 and in 2005, married Patrick Carey. She taught kindergarten and later sold real estate in the Duluth area. Beverly was an Ambassador for the Duluth Chamber of Commerce. She was the founder of the Duluth Portettes, a baton and drum corps. Graff, Sophie Barbara
Sophie Barbara Graff, 83, Duluth, died Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, at the Benedictine Health Center. She was born Nov. 3, 1926, in Duluth to Joseph and Mary (Barteki) Linski. Sophie worked for the United Steelworkers of America as an executive secretary in Duluth for 36 years. She was active in the Professional Secretaries International Association and with the DFL. She also served on the St. Louis County Civil Service Commission. Sophie was a member of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.^^Sophie enjoyed her family, her friends, her work and her many interests. She was an avid gardener and was always up for a game of smear, a pontoon boat ride and a campfire at the cabin. She was preceded in death by seven siblings. Jean Marie (Borough) Irving, 84, of Duluth, died Monday, Feb. 1, 2010 at Solvay Hospice House with her loving family by her side. ^^She was born April 19, 1925 in Duluth to Joseph and Marie Negoski. ^^Jean was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great great grandmother. ^^Jean loved nothing more than being with family and friends. ^^Jean was always active in many organizations at St. Anthony's and St. Benedicts her children's schools and church programs. She was the ultimate volunteer who cared for everyone. Jean always put others before herself even in her final days she was concerned about helping others who where sick or in need of a shoulder to lean on. ^^Jean was a member of St. Benedicts Catholic Church and the funeral lunch committee; the Rosary Society; Women's Faith in Motion; American Legion Auxiliary. She was also involved and volunteered her time visiting homebound people, helping the soup kitchen. In her younger years she was involved with the boy and girl scouts as a troop leader, plus many other organizations. ^^She brought a great deal of happiness and enthusiasm to all that she did and to all who knew her. She had a wonderful smile and vitality will be dearly missed. ^^Her loving family and the Solvay staff gently helped her complete this life's journey. LaFleur, Rosemary Frances
Rosemary Frances LaFleur, 67, of Carroll Street died, Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was born in Richmond Hill, N.Y., to William and Helen (Klarmann) Hoefner on April 22, 1942. She was married in Queens, N.Y., in 1965 and moved to Washington, D.C., and then to Duluth in 1966. She raised her family and opened her home to many foster children at the same time.^^She was employed as a registered nurse in many capacities and was always highly respected by her colleagues. Her passion was horses, so she started and built West Amity Stables in 1984 and was the owner/operator with great pride.^^Rosemary passed on her love of horses, camping, canoeing, traveling and reading to her children. Elizabeth "Betsy" Ann (Meagher) Matchett, 67, of Duluth, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010 at St. Mary's Medical Center. ^^She was born Jan. 5, 1943 in Duluth to Thomas and Beatrice (Grady) Meagher. ^^Betsy graduated from Cathedral High School in 1961 and married LeRoy Matchett in 1966. She worked for Northern City National Bank, Johnson Elevator Co., Woodland United Methodist Church and worked as a Home Health Aide. She was also a food demonstrator at Plaza Super One Foods. Betsy was a member of St. John's Catholic Church for over 44 years. She volunteered at Animal Allies Humane Society and chaired the Tag Day fund raiser for many years. She loved going to the family cabin in Solon Springs. Betsy was proud of her daughter, Jessie and grandchildren. Gerald R. Miller, 68, of Duluth, died Wednesday, March 3, 2010 in his home of natural causes. ^^He was born Nov. 21, 1941 in Milwaukee, Wis. ^^Gerald served in the U.S. Navy. He retired from the Duluth News Tribune in 2003 where he was a Pressman. He was also part owner of Copasetic Lounge. Gerald was a member of the Elk's Lodge. Morrissey, Ann Elizabeth
Ann Elizabeth (Mareck) Morrissey, 57, of Duluth died Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010 at St. Luke's Hospital, surrounded by her family after a long battle with Diabetes. ^^Ann was born July 30, 1952 in St. Cloud to Henry and Bernadette Mareck. ^^She graduated from St. Cloud Cathedral in 1970 and from St. Scholastica's School of Nursing in 1974. She worked briefly at St. Cloud Hospital before marrying Mike Morrissey on Dec. 12, 1975. Her prayer life was very important and was reflected by her volunteering at St. Mary's and Miller Dwan. Ann was the first female member of the Serra Club of Duluth and she had a strong devotion to pray for all priests, but especially the priest's in our Duluth diocese. Neumann, Kyle Matthew
Kyle Matthew Neumann, 42, of Duluth, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010 near Duluth. ^^He was born on May 28, 1967 in Fergus Falls, Minn. to Gary Neumann and Janet (Mortell) Neumann, both of Fergus Falls. ^^He graduated in 1985 from Fergus Falls High School and furthered his education at the local Community College and the University of Wisconsin in Superior where he attained his Bachelor's degree. He would have completed his Master's degree in the Spring of 2010. Kyle taught and coached football at Superior, Marshall and Proctor High Schools and was also head softball coach at Proctor. ^^Kyle married Gretchen (Allie) Neumann on Aug. 22, 1992 at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Fergus Falls. In 1996 they made their home in Duluth where he began his career of teaching and coaching. He was a member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church. Kyle loved his life, especially his wife, Gretchen and five year old son, Eric. William James Shearer, 87, 0f Maple Grove Rd. died Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, at Chris Jensen Health Center. ^^Bill was born April 9, 1922 in Duluth to William I. and Marie Shearer. ^^He married Maureen Pedrizetti on Aug. 10, 1944. Bill retired from City of Duluth, Water and Gas in 1982 as a regulator foreman. He was a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church and the Retired Public Employees Association. Bill loved sports, especially hockey. He played, coached Hockey and supported the UMD Bulldogs hockey team. He also loved to be outdoors, especially fishing. ^^He was preceded in death by his parents. ^^Bill is survived by his wife of 65 years, Maureen; his daughters, Jean Maurine of Coon Rapids, Minn., and Kathy (Roger) Alementi of Duluth; his sister, Gloria (Wally) Wolff, of Duluth; his brother, Richard (Ruth) Shearer of Duluth; grandchildren, Patti, Jim, Scott and Mark and five great grandchildren. ^^MEMORIAL SERVICES: were held in St. John's Abby at Collegeville. Taylor, Richard Norman
Richard Norman Taylor, 85, of Duluth, and formerly of St. Paul, died Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at St. Mary's Medical Center. ^^Dick was born in St. Paul to parents Florence and Ralph. ^^He graduated from Wilson High School in St. Paul and was drafted at age 19 into service in the Army during World War II, seeing action on Omaha Beach and the Battle of the Bulge. Following the war, he was a cadet Colonel in the ROTC program at and graduated from St. Thomas College in St. Paul. Following graduation, he received a commission in the Air Force, serving a distinguished and decorated 33 year career from 1951 to 1984, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. His career spanned the Korean War, a tour of duty in the Vietnam War and the Cold War, also serving his country for a period as an officer in the Central Intelligence Agency. Following retirement, Dick was the Director of the Northland Chapter of the American Red Cross and worked with the United Way. ^^In High School, Dick held the Minnesota State Record in the 120 yard high hurdles in track and field and was an editor of his high school paper, "The Wilsonian". He was in school plays in both high school and college. Dick was also a talented and accomplished artist, cartoonist, wood carver and accordionist. ^^Patriot, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, friend - our Patriarch will be sorely missed. ^^Dick is survived by his wife, Loraine; children, Stephen, Tracy, Patricia, Blaise, David, Sean, Mark and Kevin; grandchildren, Jennifer, Micah, Christopher, Meagan, Kirsten, Rori, Aidan, Bethany, Brenna, Cody, Aram, Dylan, Liam, Conner, Drew, Ryan; five great-grandchildren; brother and sisters, David, Jean, Marcia and Elizabeth. ^^VISITATION: 12 noon Thursday, March 11, until the 1 p.m. funeral service and celebration of life in Old Fort Snelling Historic Chapel in St. Paul. Udd, David Holt
David Holt Udd, 68, of W Page St. died suddenly Feb. 9, 2010 at home. ^^Dave was born Oct. 5, 1941 in Ironwood, Mich., to Kermit and Mildred Udd. ^^They moved to Duluth when Dave was in fifth grade. He graduated from East High School in 1959. He went on to UMD in 1961 and received a degree in Industrial Arts in 1966 and received a Masters in Counseling from UWS in 1974. ^^Dave married the love of his life, Carol Oman on Aug. 5, 1961. ^^Dave joined the 148th Air National Guard and took his basic training in 1959. He served for 37 years, the last two years on the State Staff, retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant. Dave has also served on the Board of Governors at the 148th for 10 years. ^^In 1966, Dave began his teaching at the Proctor Schools. He taught until 1994 when he became a counselor for the schools, retiring in 2004. ^^During the summer for 21 years, Dave would work for the City of Duluth Engineering Dept. as a land surveyor. ^^Dave was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Duluth Heights and the Industrial Arts Club. He loved to work on cars and was a member of three different car clubs. Dave also was rumored to have had a brief and discrete wrestling career. ^^Dave loved camping at Fish Lake and putzing, but most of all, Dave loved to spend time with Carol and his children and grandchildren. ^^He was preceded in death by his parents, Kermit and Mildred and his brother, John. ^^Dave is survived by his wife, Carol; daughter, Barb (Rick) Friedman of Duluth; sons, Scott (Mary) Udd of Forest Lake, Minn., Mark (Tammy) Udd and Jeff (Marina) Udd both of Duluth; grandchildren, Kyle, Shawn and Eric Friedman, Ryan, Aaron and Lauren Udd, Nolan and Alex Udd and one on the way, Joseph, Gina and Vinny Udd; sister-in-law, Darlene Udd and mother-in-law, Barbara Oman both of Duluth. Wolff, Dorothy May
Dorothy May Wolff, 93, of Hermantown, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010 at home. ^^She was born Oct. 31, 1916 in Fairmont, Minn. to Charles E. and Elizabeth Newville. ^^Dorothy married Ralph N. Wolff on Feb. 8, 1936 in Fairmont. Residents of Duluth since 1960, Dorothy had worked for the Duluth Public School system as a secretary for 10 years. She was a member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church. ^^Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph in 1980. ^^She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth "Betty" (Phil) Kollasch of Duluth, Rita Benzmiller of Canon City, Colo., Rosalie (David) Pieper of Aurora, Colo., Mary Ann (Martin "Frank") Stocke of Duluth, Judith (Paul) Yielding of Des Moines, Iowa, and Jeanine (Eric) Lundin of Saginaw, Minn.; 15 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren. ^^VISITATION: 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday with rosary prayers at 6:30 p.m. in Dougherty Funeral Home, continuing on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Raphael's Catholic Church, 5779 Seville Rd. Zabukover, Henry James
Henry James Zabukover, 92, Duluth, died Friday, Feb. 19, 2010 at the Benedictine Health Center. ^^He was born July 9, 1917 in Aurora, Minn. to James and Mary (Mlaker) Zabukover. Henry was a Navy veteran of World War II. He worked as a plasterer. ^^He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Martin, his sisters Virginia and Mary, and his sons Richard and James. ^^Survivors include his wife Alyce Marie, and his son John, both of Duluth; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; his nieces: Diane (Terry) Hiebert of Annandale, Va., Kathy (Bill) LeBeau of Brooklyn Park, Minn., Carol (David) Jensen of Western Springs, Ill., Noel (Ron) Lipman of Indian Springs, Ill.; and his nephew Patrick (Olivia) O'Donnell of Medesto, Calif. ^^SERIVCES: There will be private family services. Zimm, Victor P
Victor P. Zimm, 90, of Duluth died, Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at the Solvay Hospice House in Duluth. He was born on July 14, 1919, to Ludwig and Josephine Zmyslony in Duluth. He graduated from Denfeld High School and was a U.S. Army Tech. Sergeant during World War II. On March 23, 1940, he married Virginia Walczak at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Duluth. They were married 66 years.^^Vic was employed as a sheetmetal worker for many years, working for various contractors in the area retiring in 1984.^^He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church since 1955 and a member of the choir. He volunteered for many things including reading to young children in the area schools, helping with the schools making birdfeeders each year. He was a driver for meals on wheels and volunteered at Lakeshore Lutheran Home, bringing people to Mass each week. He was also an active member of the Lakside/Lester Park citizens patrol. Victor and Virginia where original members of AARP Lakeside Chapter.^^He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Virginia; brothers, Edward, Chester, Appy and Julius and his sisters, Helen and Leona.^^Survivors include his daughter, Diane (Terry) Scott of Duluth; his son, Rod Zimm of Duluth; his grandchildren, Christopher (Clare) Scott; Brendan (Katie) Scott, Emily (Kyle) Holmes, Stephanie, Aaron and Nicole Zimm; a great- granddaughter, Sabrina Scott, and many nieces and nephews.^^VISITATION: 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb, 11, 2010, in Dougherty Funeral Home with wake prayers at 5 p.m. and will continue at St. Michael's Catholic Church on Friday, Feb. 12, 2010, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial.^^Memorials are preferred to St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 4901 E.
