Margaret May “Meg” Schultz, 98, of Duluth, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at Marywood Assisted Living.
She was born in Duluth on July 24, 1927, to Richard and Edith Hodgson, just minutes after her twin brother, Richard. Meg grew up in West Duluth and graduated from Duluth Denfeld High School in 1944 and from Duluth State Teachers’ College (DSTC - later UMD) in 1948. Meg taught orchestra in Tracey, MN, for a year before marrying Clarence “Bud” Schultz in 1949 and moving to Richland, WA. She taught orchestra in Richland until taking a leave of absence when her children, Susan and Paula, were born.
Meg and Bud moved their family to Stephen, MN, for three years before returning to Duluth in 1958. Meg went back to school to obtain her certification in elementary education and began her Duluth Public Schools career teaching 5th grade – and music - at Lakeside Elementary School (which her father had attended 65 years earlier). Some years later, Meg transitioned to teaching elementary music full-time until making a final transition back to the 5th grade classroom at Lincoln Elementary until her retirement in 1987.
Outside of the classroom, Meg was a cellist in the Duluth Symphony Orchestra and a dedicated member of the United Baptist Christian Church, singing with her girls under Bud’s direction in the adult choir and subsequently conducting both the youth and adult choirs there.
In addition to being active in her church, Meg also was a member of SAI (music fraternity), DKG (professional society for women educators), and PEO (women’s philanthropic educational organization), serving in various leadership positions.
In retirement, Meg and Bud enjoyed traveling overseas, first with Meg’s sister Frances and brother-in-law Russell, then with friends from the music department at DTSC. They also traveled across the US to meet up with their daughter, Susan, a flutist in the US Army Field Band – or to visit both daughters in Maryland. Meg continued her travels with her daughters for many years after Bud’s death.
Meg was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bud, daughter Susan Schultz, brother Richard P. Hodgson, sister Frances Hadley, and grandson Mark McDermott.
Meg is survived by her daughter Paula (Dennis McDermott) Schultz, sons-in-law Dennis McDermott, Patrick Dillon, and Lance Maloney, grandson Michael (Britton) McDermott, and great-grandchildren William and Abigail McDermott.
Visitation will be held at the Benedictine Health Center Chapel on Friday July 24, 2026, from 12:00-1:00 pm until the Celebration of Life Service begins at 1:00pm. Inurnment will be in Park Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to a charity of one’s choice.
Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home. 600 E. 2nd Street, Duluth, MN 55805.
