Sarah Segal

January 29, 1951 — January 4, 2022

Sarah J Segal.

We lost a wonderful sister, daughter, aunt and friend as Sarah passed away on January 4, 2022. She was such an incredible person in life.

After graduating from East High School she moved to Minneapolis for college. Having an opportunity to move to San Francisco she ended up working with a person who taught her the in’s and out’s of the publishing business. At W.H. Freeman she fine tuned her skills and became a production coordinator in their textbook division. When Freeman was bought out by Worth Publishers they transferred her to New York. This is where she really wanted to live.

In New York she continued to work in the publishing industry and enjoying the New York life style. She loved art and would spend many weekends going through museums. Her love of reading was evident by the large number of books she had in her home. Her wonderful friends surrounded her with love.

She was fiercely independent and made her life on her own terms. She enjoyed coming back to Duluth to visit family and friends. She said she could always tell she was getting closer to home when she looked down and could only see green forests instead of buildings.

She traveled to Europe a number of times and her goal was to retire somewhere in the south of France. She knew the best restaurants in NYC and went out often with friends to enjoy dinner. She never owned a car, as was typical for New Yorkers, but she owned a motor cycle and took that where the subway didn’t go. She lived life on her own terms and liked it that way.

The family wants to thank Walker Methodist Place in Mpls for their extraordinary care and love they showered on upon her. We could not have taken this journey without their support. Grace Hospice came into Sarah’s life at just the right time. Amy and Annie and their whole team were there every step of the way as Sarah’s illness progressed. Their advice and support was invaluable. N.C. Little Memorial Hospice took care of Sarah like she was part of their own family. Their end of life care made sure Sarah didn’t suffer and that she was not in pain.

Sarah decided that because of the rarity of her illness (MSA) she wanted to donate her brain to the Mayo in Jacksonville, Florida who have an extensive research program on rare diseases.

Sarah is survived by her sister Toby (John) Sillanpa, niece Rachel(Brian) Edelschick, nephew Aaron (Melanie) Sillanpa, great nieces and nephews Brynn and Eli Sillanpa and Mina and Reece Edelschick and many faithful and loving friends.
