Janine Carol Dahlquist, aged 65, passed over to be with God Wednesday, March the 25th 2020 after a five-year battle with cancer. She was kept in comfort at Essentia Health and surrounded by her immediate family during her final moments. She was born Janine Carol Maly on February 16th, 1955 in Duluth, MN, attended Duluth East High School, and graduated from the University of Minnesota-Duluth. She wed Rod Dahlquist in Duluth in 1976 and began a lifelong career as an educator in the Duluth Public School system. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and sister, Janine took pride in her family and they in her. She is survived by her husband, Rod Dahlquist; her children Emily Laughlin (Wade, Shakopee, MN), Brita Dahlquist (Chris, Minneapolis, MN), and Brandon Dahlquist (Caitlan Taylor, Chicago, IL); her grandchildren Tessa, Cohen, and Booker Laughlin (Shakopee, MN); her mother, Neva Carol Emanuelson Maly (Duluth, MN); and her brothers Kevin Maly (Michael Fyler, Denver, CO.) and Tim Maly (Tina, Duluth, MN). Her father, S.J. Robert Maly, preceded her in death. Janine led a life of service to those in her community. As a teacher, artist, and caregiver, she worked tirelessly to make the lives of her loved ones the best they could be. She had recently retired from the Duluth Public School system, where she was a well-loved educator for 38 years. In her retirement, she volunteered her time in the guidance department for at-risk students at Duluth East High School. A lifelong member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, she sang in the choir, served as President of the Church Council, and led efforts to bring life back to the congregation following the church fire of 2016. She shared her musical talents with the Twin Ports Wind Ensemble, Gloria Dei, and the Duluth Playhouse as a featured trumpet soloist as well as lifting her voice alongside her husband Rod in their beloved Arrowhead Chorale. Like everything else in her life, she did her cancer treatments well. She was the perfect patient. She didn’t miss a day and she found energy in living her life to the fullest. She completed three half-marathons, volunteered her culinary skills at Gloria Dei, and kept an active social calendar with her sewing and knitting clubs. She also traveled extensively, including trips abroad with Arrowhead Chorale and around the country with her family. Her gifts to the community and her family have been woven into their lives and she will live on in their hearts forever. Due to the current events, a Celebration of Life will be held when the appropriate number of family and loved ones can gather.
