Genevieve Shubitz

Genevieve M. Shubitz passed away at the Benedictine Health Center in Duluth, MN on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at the age of 87.  She was a graduate of Duluth Cathedral High School and the College of St. Scholastica,and received her Masters’ degree from the University of Minnesota.  In 1955 she joined the Order of St. Benedict, known as Sister Vianney, and taught elementary education at several Duluth schools, including the former St. Clement’s parish.  In 1973 she was released from her vows and taught 21 years in the St. Paul Public Schools system, retiring and eventually moving back to Duluth and the Benedictine Health Community.  Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Mary (Baznik) Shubitz, brothers Thomas, Paul, John and James, and sisters Mary Glamuzina and Emma Himebaugh.  Genevieve is survived by her sister Dorothy Janchar of Kansas City, MO. and 21 nieces and nephews.  A special thank you to the nurses, aids, Dr. Mark Boyce and the NP’s for their care and compassion given to Genevieve.  Visitation:  Thursday, May 9th. from 4-5 PM, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 5 PM at the Benedictine Health Center chapel.  Private interment will be at Calvary Cemetery.  Donations in her honor may be made to the College of St. Scholastica or the Benedictine Health Center.  Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth, 218-727-3555.
