William “Bill” Nisius, Jr.

Bill Nisius, 83, of Duluth passed away peacefully on August 9, 2022.

He graduated from Cathedral High School in Duluth and attended UMD before joining the Air National Guard 148th Fighter Wing, where he spent most of his career. Bill enjoyed the many friendships he made in the guards as well as active-duty tours overseas. He especially loved the year he spent in Germany with the guards and the opportunity for his family to visit and tour Europe. He also loved participating in the many Volksmarches.

Bill met his wife Jeanne Soberg in 1969 and they celebrated 53 years of marriage. They enjoyed boating, golfing, bowling and playing cards and cribbage together, and with their many friends. Bill loved to dance and watch the Twins play. Together they had two children, Laura (Nisius) Sieger and Greg Nisius. They enjoyed lake days at their home on Pike Lake. Bill was famous as the pontoon captain of the orange double decker. He was active in coaching, volunteering and even starting youth sports programs in the Pike Lake area.

Upon retirement, Bill & Jeanne spent their extended winters at Cypress Lakes in Lakeland, Florida, where they resided for 20 years with summers at Pike Lake. Bill loved Disney and volunteered as a greeter at Sea World in Orlando. Bill and Jeanne also loved to travel, taking several cruises and trips to Europe, Greece, Australia, Italy, Ireland, Mexico and more.

Bill adored his four grandchildren and loved watching them play sports and swimming in the pool, taking golf cart rides, and building sandcastles with them in Florida. He was a kid at heart and enjoyed life, never taking anything too seriously. He was a character and always had a “smirk smile” on his face, which meant he was up to something. Bill loved his sweet treats. He was always willing to help anyone, and he was greatly loved and will be missed by many. He enjoyed many great memories with family and friends and that time together was always most important to him. His family will always remember him as forever young.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Vola & William Nisius; brother Alan Nisius; step-mother Ellen Nisus; and his beloved dog, Smokey. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jeanne; children Laura (Todd) Sieger, and Greg (Becca) Nisius; grandchildren Macy & Nya Sieger, and Blake & Wyatt Nisius as well as many other extended family and friends.

A special thank you to the many compassionate caregivers at Edgewood Vista and St. Mary’s ICU.
