Thomas John Smrekar (Tom, TJ, Papa), age 84, passed away on June 20, 2026, in Duluth, MN. Born May 21, 1942, in Ely, MN, to John and Gladys Smrekar, he was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Tom found his greatest peace and most cherished memories in the outdoors as an avid fisherman, hunter, skier and horseman. Tom’s deep appreciation of the outdoors, spirit of adventure and strength will live on in the hearts of the family and friends who loved him.
Tom spent his early years in Ely, MN, spending a great deal of time in what we now know as the Boundary Waters, hunting and fishing. As a talented football player, he went on to play linebacker at the University of MN, graduating with a degree in journalism in 1965.
After graduation, Tom began his career as a reporter for the Duluth News Tribune, went on to work as a lobbyist in Washington DC and completed his career as Group Vice President for Potlatch Corporation, retiring in 1999. Post retirement, Tom lived his days as what many would call the sportsman’s dream - skiing in Big Sky Montana, hunting pheasants and grouse in North Dakota, and fishing walleyes in Northern Minnesota and Ontario.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Patty Smrekar, children and stepchildren, Ernest Smrekar, Todd Smrekar (Sue), Faye Proulx (Fred), and Jon Johansen (Jill) as well as five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents John and Gladys Smrekar, brother Ernest Smrekar, and son-in-law Fred Clements.
