Ronald H. Sangster

Ronald H. Sangster, 92, of Duluth, passed away after a short illness on Friday, September 11, 2026. Ron was born in Duluth on May 11, 1934, grew up in Lester Park and was a 1952 graduate of Duluth Central High School. He joined the Army after graduation and was stationed in Germany. Deployment during peacetime allowed him to take in the sights and enjoy the excellent German bread, sausages, and beer. He spoke of his time in Germany fondly and returned to visit later in life. Upon his discharge, Ron returned to Duluth and attended UMD, where he met Eileen Sage. They were married in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on August 16, 1958, and recently celebrated their 68th anniversary. Ron spent his career working for Burlington Northern Railroad until he took early retirement, which allowed him time to pursue his love of the outdoors. Fishing and hiking, which he enjoyed since childhood, gardening, cross-country skiing, and biking filled his days after retirement.

He had a great love for cars and could talk about each one he ever owned. In recent years, the highlight of his week was attending the men’s coffee chat at Portman Community Center on Wednesdays. Ron loved and was very proud of his grandchildren. He was also overjoyed to meet all his new great-grandchildren. We will miss his laughter and his appreciation of food, especially goodies! Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Martha, and his brother, Gordon. He is survived by his wife, Eileen; four children, Linda (Andy) Schmid of Bloomington, MN, Michael (Sandra) Sangster of Duluth, Jane Sangster of Miami Beach, FL, and Patricia (Steve) Moe of Duluth; seven grandchildren, Amanda, Melanie, Wyatt, Ariel, Michelle, Gwyneth and Ewan; and five great-grandchildren, Abigail, Violet, Zoe, Zac and Zina. A private family memorial will be held. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home.
