Age 94, passed away on January 11, 2026. He was born in Duluth on July 16, 1931, to Anthony and Dorothy (Coan) Unzen and was a lifelong Duluth resident.
Bob attended the College of St. Thomas and the University of Minnesota, graduating with a degree in Accounting. As a CPA, he became a partner at Rauschenfel and Company which became Robert Unzen Company when his partner retired. Bob served on the State Board of Accountancy, including concurrent governor appointed terms as it’s president. Bob spent many late nights during tax season with his beloved golden retriever Monterra at his side. After his retirement in 1995, he and his wife enjoyed time together, traveling extensively, and spending time with their children, grand and great-grandchildren. Bob enjoyed golfing with his friends, playing many regional courses.
Bob was a devout Catholic and a member of The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary and was a proud veteran of the Airforce serving during the Korean War period. He is preceded in death by his parents, son James, sister Jean Rutka, son in-law James Tallman, and great grandson Ezra Unzen. Survived by beloved wife of 70 years, Adele; children John (Joanne) Unzen, Susan (Charles) Whiting, and Louisa Tallman; sister Joyce Allan (Don); grandchildren, Robert (Brandy), Charles, Michael (Kortnie), and Margaret; great-grandchildren, Aurora, Leo, Kenlie, and Crosby. A Visitation will be held on Monday, January 19, 2026 from 5-7pm at Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second Street, Duluth with a Rosary and Prayer Service beginning at 6:30pm. The Visitation will continue at 10am on Tuesday, January 20, 2026 at The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary, 2801E. 4th Street, Duluth until the 11am Mass of Christian Burial. Burial at Calvary Cemetery.
