Matthew James Cuypers Sr.

November 23, 1959 — November 19, 2025

Duluth

Matthew James Cuypers Sr., 66, of Duluth, Minnesota, passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 19, 2025.

Born and raised in Duluth, Matthew was a devout Catholic and a man of many gifts. He found joy in fishing, hunting, farming, and working with his hands as a skilled mechanic. Matthew proudly served his country as a Marine, spending six years stationed in San Diego, California, before being honorably discharged in 1983.

In quieter moments, he loved watching his favorite Westerns and MeTV classics, tending his vegetable garden, and enjoying the peace of solitude. Above all, Matthew treasured the opportunity to teach meaningful life skills to his children and grandchildren, a legacy they will carry forward.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Shirley; his father, Eugene; and his brother, Ronald.

Matthew is lovingly remembered by his wife, Nancy; his seven children; Shanna, Matthew Jr., Alicia, Christopher, Eva, Zachariah, and Seth; his eight siblings; twenty-two grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

A memorial service with full military honors will be held at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Duluth at noon on December 11, 2025. A potluck gathering will follow at Matthew’s home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Matthew’s honor.

Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 218-727-3555. Please visit www.dfhduluth.com to sign the online guestbook.
