Marcella "Marcy" (Zollar) Rooney

Marcella Rooney, 93, of Duluth, formerly of Soudan, passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at Diamond Willow Memory Care in Proctor where she resided the last few months of her life.

She was born July 16, 1932, in Soudan MN, the seventh child of Anton and Julia (Stepan) Zollar of Soudan. She was a graduate of Tower Soudan High School and the College of St. Scholastica with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. Throughout her nursing career she worked at the Soudan Hospital, Virginia Hospital and Ely Bloomenson Hospital. She was a passionate nurse who cared deeply for her patients in the hospitals, her fellow neighbors and family.

Marcy was united in marriage to Jerome Rooney on August 4, 1956, at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Tower. They made their home in Soudan until 2004 at which time they moved to Duluth. She was a past member of St. Martin's Catholic Church in Tower and was currently a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Duluth.

She was a member of the American Slovenian Catholic Union, Nelson-Jackson American Legion Post 245 Auxiliary and the Old Settler's Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome; son, Timothy; son-in-law, Matthew Yernatich; parents, Anton and Julia Zollar; brothers, Bernard, Joseph, Robert, Jack and Edward Zollar; and sisters, Dorothy Zollar, Ruth Gottlieb, Gertrude Vesel, Rose Zollar and Terese Moraski.

She is survived by her daughter, Yvonne Yernatich; grandchildren, Marisa (Jake) Williams, Megan Yernatich, Joseph (Sidney) Yernatich, Olivia Rooney, Morgan (Nick) Moore and Aiden Rooney; great grandchildren, Weston, Ella and Beau Williams, Blakely Yernatich and numerous nieces and nephews.

Marcy was a devout catholic and proud of her Slovenian heritage, her large loving family and her beautiful vegetable and flower gardens she cultivated. She loved gifting her family and friends the fruits of her labors.

A family Mass of Christian burial was held at St. John's Catholic Church in Duluth, and her internment will be at the cemetery in Tower, MN next to her husband Jerry and son Tim.
