Kay Salo

Madeline “Kay” Salo, 86, of Duluth, died Tuesday, Nov. 14 at Solvay Hospice House with her family by her side. Kay was born July 3, 1937, in Superior to Ralph and Elvene Wick. She was a 1955 graduate and lifelong supporter of Duluth Central High School. She met her husband, Donald Salo, while she was at Central, and they married on Nov. 23, 1955. Central is also where Kay and “The Club” began their decades of friendship, and she organized Class of 1955 reunions for years.

She had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel. She was active in the development, growth and success of the Duluth Superior Alpine Club and drove countless van loads of young skiers to races across the country.

Kay was a great entertainer with a green thumb and aesthetic touch that made the family home on Island Lake a beautiful, comfortable gathering spot for her frequent guests. She had a love for animals, always with a pet or two around, and a passion for animal rescue efforts.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Elvene; siblings Ralph Wick, Carole Evenson and Dianne Reasor; husband Donald; and granddaughter Olivia Salo.

Kay is survived by her children, David (Tracie) Salo, Nancy (John) Dozier-Salo, Scott (Sara) Salo, Betsy (Bob) Mehrman and Maggie (Brian) Whitmill; sister Nancy Myhran; grandchildren Claire (Patrick) Baskerville and their daughter, Fiona, Jennifer Plum, Elaina Dozier, Evan (Rudi Summers) Dozier, Kristina (Rob Miller) Mehrman and Kara Mehrman; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 24 from 4-6 p.m. in the Dougherty Funeral Home.  A Celebration of Life will be held, Saturday, Nov. 25, from 1-3 p.m. with a short service at 1:15 p.m. at Ridgeview Country Club, 700 W Redwing St., Duluth, MN.  Memorials are preferred and may be directed to Animal Allies, 4006 Airport Road, Duluth, MN 55811.  Sign the online register book at www.dfhduluth.com.
