Age 86, of Carlton, MN, formerly Duluth, died on Thursday, December 14, 2023 with loving family beside her. Judy was born May 12, 1937. She raised eight children who, along with her grandkids and great-grandkids were the joy of her life. After working various jobs with ISD 709, she retired in 1997. Judy loved things great and small, including being a master gardener, crafting, fishing and eating what she caught, foster grand parenting, community extension classes and being a voting judge during recent elections. Her favorite times were family get-togethers, especially with grandkids. Judy took her Catholic faith to heart and encouraged her family to do the same as well. She enjoyed singing in the church choir at the cathedral as well as St. Francis in Carlton.
Judy is preceded in death by her parents, Ezra Hugh and Alvina Couchman; and former husband and loving father of her children, Daniel James Palen.
Survived by children, Christine (Mike) Stemper, Duluth, MN; Peter (Pamela) Palen, Vancouver, WA; Daniel (Eva) Palen, Helena, MT; Penelope Cash (Steve Gault), Carlton, MN; Patrick (Randi) Palen, San Diego, CA; Sara (Mike) Rowe, Duluth, MN; Amy (Greg) Kishel, Superior, WI; Jamie Palen, Duluth, MN; also survived by 25 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; sister, Nancy Pundsack, Georgetown, Ontario, Canada; several nieces, nephews, and cousins, especially Martha Youngblood, Mora, MN. Special thanks to Essentia Health ICU Staff, Palliative Care Staff and special gratitude to Solvay Hospice House for the love and care given to Judy and her family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00am on Monday, December 18, 2023 at Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary, 2801 E 4th St, Duluth, MN 55812 with a Visitation beginning at 10:00am. Burial at Holy Family Catholic Cemetery in Bulldog Lake, MN will follow on Tuesday.
