Joseph Wayne Balcom age 43 of New Era, MI died on September 30, 2026 at Essentia-St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, MN. He was born on August 29, 1983 to parents, Tim Balcom and Denise (Palchak). He was raised in Hesperia, MI where he developed a passion for the outdoors. He was happiest when hunting, fishing, or just being outside. He graduated from Hesperia High School in 2002. Just months after 9/11, Joe was inspired to enlist in the Marines and proudly served his country for 12 years. While in the service, he continued to pursue another passion, baseball. He played on the Marines baseball team and was a life-long fan of the Chicago Cubs. In civilian life, he attended trade school and became a pipefitter. Walking in the footsteps of his grandfather, Wayne Sweet Balcom, who Joe admired greatly. Joe was a part of UA Local 174 Plumbers & Pipefitters. More than anything, Joe loved being a dad. His daughters, Errika and Izzabella were the center of his universe. On October 7, 2023 he married the love of his life, Samantha Frees. Samantha along with her two boys, Peyton and Lennix created one happy blended family.
Joe is preceded in death by his father, Tim Balcom. He is survived by his wife, Samantha; daughters, Errika and Izzabella Herin-Balcom; sons, Peyton and Lennix Pranger; mother, Denise (Larry) McGahan; siblings, Nichole (Jon) Skok, Will (Jamie) McGahan, Stephanie Hills, Ashley (Anthony) Tanner, DJ (Haley) Hills; step-mother Karen Balcom; friends who became brothers, Joe, Jeff, Ely and Trent; and many aunts, uncles, extended family and friends.
