It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joan Diane Johnson, a beloved mother, grandmother, wife, and friend, who left this world peacefully on August 18, 2025, at her home in Hermantown, Minnesota. Born on February 7, 1943, in Duluth, Minnesota, Joan was a beacon of kindness, compassion, and generosity throughout her life.
Joan was the cherished daughter of William and Lois Jakubek, who preceded her in death along with her beloved brother, Spencer Jakubek, and sister, Paulette Franckowiak. Their memories lived on in her heart, guiding her through life’s challenges and joys.
On July 6, 1962, Joan married the love of her life, Lyle Raymond Johnson. Their marriage was a testament to the love and partnership they shared, raising two wonderful children, Lyle Andrew Johnson and Retta Mary Marie DeYoung. Her in-laws include Amy Johnson (Lyle) and Jeff DeYoung (Retta). Joan’s family was her pride and joy, and she took immense delight in her role as a grandmother to Katie Johnson, Ashlie DeYoung, Matthew Johnson, Sarah Johnson, and Bailie DeYoung. Each grandchild brought a unique light into her life, and she always made time to create special memories with them.
Joan was a proud graduate of Central High School, having completed her education in 1961. Known for her vibrant spirit and creative talents, she was a passionate greeting card maker, a hobby that allowed her to express her love and affection for family and friends. Her creativity extended into her work life; she spent many years selling Avon, showcasing her flair for beauty and connection with people. After high school Joan worked her first job as a Ben Franklin fountain girl. Later Joan worked at Goldie's Designer Dress Store as a model and retail salesperson. In her later career she worked for the Marshall Sisters, and before retirement she worked at the John Duss Music Conservatory working with Fransican Sisters of the Eucharist where she fostered her love for music and community.
Throughout her life, Joan was deeply involved in her community. She served as past president of Rice Lake Volunteer Fire Department ladies auxiliary. As a member of the auxiliary she was instrumental in fundraising for the needs of the fire department in particular the Annual Halloween Carnival raised much needed funds for the fire department. Joan was a lifetime member of St. Joe’s Catholic Church in Gnesen. Her faith was a cornerstone of her existence, her commitment to the Mustard Seed Ministry and assisting her husband in Knights of Columbus activities which exemplified her desire to give back and support those in need.
Joan will be remembered for her warm smile, her compassionate heart, and her generous, witty spirit. Friends and family alike were drawn to her kind nature and her ability to uplift others. She had an uncanny ability to make everyone feel special, whether through a thoughtful card or a warm hug.
Her legacy is one of love, creativity, and community service. Joan's life touched many, and her spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
