Jeanette B. Markes
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jeanette B. Markes, a deeply beloved mother, aunt, and cherished friend whose warmth, creativity, and generosity touched the lives of many.
Jeanette shared a remarkable love story with her husband, Chris Markes. Married for 53 years, the two built a life grounded in devotion, laughter, and steadfast partnership. Chris preceded her in death in 2013, but their enduring love remained a guiding presence throughout Jeanette’s life.
Jeanette was a devoted mother to her children, Sheila and Tino. Yet her nurturing spirit reached far beyond her own family. She had a gift for welcoming others with open arms and an open heart, becoming a second mother to friends of her children, neighborhood kids, and anyone who needed encouragement, kindness, or simply a place to belong.
Creativity flowed naturally through Jeanette’s life. When her children were young, she lovingly sewed clothes for them by hand. Over the years her creative pursuits expanded to include making stuffed bears, beautiful embroidery, and, more recently, delicate felt creations. From hearts and birds to festive holiday ornaments, each piece she crafted carried a bit of her joy and care. She especially delighted in giving these handmade gifts to neighborhood children and friends, sharing her creativity in ways that made others feel remembered and special.
Jeanette also found deep joy in the garden. A passionate gardener, she cultivated an abundant array of fresh vegetables, tending her plants with patience and pride. The fruits of her garden often made their way to her dinner table, where meals became gatherings filled with conversation, laughter, and the simple pleasures of home.
Friendship was another great joy in Jeanette’s life. She maintained lifelong bonds with friends from her high school years, shared laughter and camaraderie with her Red Hat group, and enjoyed the company of friends who shared her love of antiques. Wherever she went, Jeanette formed lasting connections, drawn together by her kindness, humor, and genuine interest in the lives of others.
Jeanette’s life was defined by generosity of spirit, creativity of heart, and a remarkable ability to make others feel valued and loved. Though she will be deeply missed, the light she brought into the world will continue to shine brightly in the memories and hearts of her family and friends.
