Duluth

Gary Berggren, age 81, of Duluth MN, died June 4, 2025, at St. Luke’s Hospital, with his wife Sue his side.

Gary was born December 14, 1944, to Robert and Lorraine Berggren in Minneapolis, MN. He grew up in Minneapolis and at his family resort, Whispering Pines on Lake Kabetogama, MN. He helped his father build new cabins for the resort and assisted in managing the resort as needed. Gary became a master carpenter and continuously helped friends and family with construction, plumbing and electrical projects. Other than construction, he taught himself culinary skills and prepared delicious meals to the delight of family and friends. He was a kind, caring person who was generous with his time and talent, always willing to share his skills as a "good friend!" Gary and Sue worked together on many projects at their home on the French River.

Sue and Gary met at U.M.D. in 1966 and were married in December of 1968. Gary earned a BS, MS in Counseling and Specialist Degree in Administration. Gary’s teaching career began in Wauwatosa, WI., followed by Edina Public Schools and was a teacher, guidance counselor and principal in the Duluth Public Schools for a combined total of 41 years of experience in education. He was passionate about children and loved teaching science and math in elementary schools.

Downhill skiing was another of Gary's favorite activities. He was active in the National Ski Patrol for 30 years, which included teaching his expertise in Outdoor Emergency First Aid Skills. He and Sue made frequent canoe trips exploring the BWCA with family, friends, and students. Gary loved canoeing during warm, sunny days on the Brule River, WI.

Gary touched many lives throughout his life with his intuitive spirit and soul.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, his older sister Patty, his younger brother Jeffrey, and his brother-in-law Pat H. Magie.

He is survived by Susan, his wife of 55 loving years of marriage, brother-in-law, Jerry Calengor, and sisters-in-law, Sally Magie Hultstrand, Mickey Magie Calengor, Joan Magie McMillan and 22 nieces and nephews.
