Fredrick J. “Fred” Pianfetti, 76, of Duluth, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, July 31, 2025. He was born on October 10, 1948, in Hibbing, MN. He was raised by his mother, Laurel Pierson, and stepfather, Vernon Pierson, who lovingly guided him as a father.
Fred graduated from Toivola-Meadowlands High School and proudly served in the U.S. Navy. On August 22, 1970, he married Claudia Annala, with whom he spent over five decades building a life and raising their family. He worked as a mobile equipment mechanic for U.S. Steel, retiring in 2004.
A member of Christ Lutheran Church, where he was known for his humor, and the VFW, Fred enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. Walking the dog, working in the yard, fixing cars, traveling to new places, and cherishing time with his grandchildren were some of his favorite pastimes. He was especially proud of building his own home near Buhl, MN—a true testament to his skill and determination.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Laurel; stepfather, Vernon Pierson; brother, David; stepbrothers, Kenny and Keith Pierson, nephew, Vernon, and niece, Tiami.
Fred is survived by his wife of nearly 55 years, Claudia; sons James (Heather), Daniel (Liz), David, and Joseph (Emilie); grandchildren Logan, Breanna, Claudia, Nathan, Lucian, Warren, and Wesley; sisters Ellie (Brad) Jensen, Bonnie (widow of Marvin) Sirjord, and Carol Browne; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. until the 1:00 p.m. memorial service at Christ Lutheran Church, 2415 Ensign St., Duluth, MN 55811. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home. 600 E. 2nd St. Duluth, MN 55805. 218-727-3555
