Flora E “Chickie” Broman, 80, went home to heaven on Saturday, May 4, 2024, surrounded by her family. She was born April 27, 1944, to Hank and Elaine Leischke. She grew up in Duluth and graduated in 1963 from Duluth Cathedral. She and her husband John were blessed to enjoy 34 years together.
Chickie was a loving wife, sister, mother, grandma, great-grandma, and friend. All who knew her were lucky to know such a beautiful soul, and her faith and love for the Lord was apparent to all. She had a passion for the outdoors, gardening, and creating art from nature; particularly with driftwood and she received many blue ribbons for her flower designs in contests. Mostly she enjoyed her grandchildren. They treasure the memories of her showing them how to work with nature and the outdoors to create beauty.
Her zest for life propelled her to enjoy many activities in her lifetime. She was an excellent cook, athlete, artist, bowler, and golfer, to name a few. Her favorite activity was going camping with John and dog Marcella in their motor home and Grand Marais was her happy place. She and John enjoyed winters in Florida for many years, but she felt Duluth was home.
She enjoyed giving of herself and helping others. In the 80’s she created and coached a girls softball league in Hermantown. When John’s work in the Minnesota Air National Guard brought them to Eagan in the 90’s, she volunteered as a youth camp counselor and as a eucharistic minister at St Paul’s Hospital. Chickie loved her parish at St Benedict’s and started their Women’s Faith in Motion group 22 years ago which she dearly loved.
Chickie is survived by her loving husband John and children Dana (Trevin) Sorby, Dan Rowland, Brenda Rose, David Broman, Paul (Lindsey) Broman and Dan (Genni) Broman. Grandchildren Wyatt, Conor, Valerie, Emmie, Brittany, Adele, Brianna, Alek, Nathaniel, Olivia, Dawson, Dylan, David, Ethan, Ava, Elsa, and Beckham.
Great-grandchildren Levi, Leo, Rhylee, Evalina, Siersha, and Erik, her brother Dan Leischke, brother-in-law Marc Snow and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister Cindy Snow.
Visitation at 10am and a mass of Christian burial at 11am will be held at St Benedict’s Catholic Church in Duluth on May 14, 2024. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance, mnovarian.org. Many heartfelt thanks to Essentia and Solvay Hospice House for their gentle and loving end-of-life care of Chickie and her family.
