Erin Renee Christensen, 22, of Duluth, Minnesota, passed away on September 30, 2026, following a brief and courageous battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, determination, a deep faith in God, and an unforgettable zest for life.
Erin was a beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, girlfriend, coach, teammate, and passionate friend who lived with resolve, loved her people fiercely, and left an unforgettable mark on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
From the day she was born, Erin was tenacious, independent, and strong-willed, with a personality that could fill a room. She was funny, loyal, compassionate, and sometimes stubborn in the very best way. She knew what she wanted and wasn't afraid to go after it. She had a gift for making people feel seen, loved, and included, and she built friendships that became like family.
Erin had many passions, including dance, basketball, and travel. She also had a unique sense of style and loved thrifting one-of-a-kind outfits, purses, and shoes. She loved decorating, flowers, and finding things that reflected her personality. When her family and friends occasionally questioned one of her purchases, Erin would simply laugh and say, "You're just not seeing my vision!"
But soccer held a special place in Erin's heart. She loved playing it, coaching it, and watching it—especially when she could cheer on her sister Kieran and brother Ryan. Soccer was woven throughout so much of Erin's life, giving her teammates from kindergarten through college, coaches, competition, confidence, countless memories, and, most importantly, lifelong friendships. She loved the game, but even more, she loved the people who came with it—especially her teammates and the amazing girls she was privileged to coach.
Erin had big dreams for her future, and learning was always at the center of her world. Erin attended Holy Rosary/Stella Maris Elementary School, Ordean East Middle School, and Duluth East High School. After graduating from the University of Minnesota in May of 2026 with degrees in mathematics and political science, she had just begun law school. She was smart, driven, and determined to build a life based on helping others. She had so much more she wanted to do, places she wanted to go, people she wanted to love, and goals she wanted to accomplish.
Erin loved the energy and adventure of big cities and could easily imagine herself building a life in one, but her heart was always in Duluth. There was nowhere she would rather be than home, wrapped in a blanket, surrounded by her family and friends. For all of her independence and big dreams, some of Erin's happiest moments were the simplest ones—being home with the people she loved.
In September 2026, Erin was diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma that came on suddenly and changed the course of her life in a matter of weeks. She faced an incredibly difficult medical journey with the same determination she had shown throughout her life. Her family is forever grateful for the doctors, nurses, therapists, and caregivers at Essentia Health and the Mayo Clinic who fought alongside her and cared for her with extraordinary compassion.
But Erin was never defined by her illness. She was defined by how she lived.
She loved her people hard. Her family was at the center of her world, and she was at the center of theirs. She leaves behind her parents, Roy and Toni Christensen; siblings Kieran and Ryan; boyfriend Michael Kastelic; grandparents Renee Hunter, Mike Malkovich, and Ralph and Paula Christensen; and aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends, teammates, coaches, classmates, teachers, and others whose lives she touched.
Michael was the love of Erin's life and her rock. Erin was incredibly fortunate to have a love like that, and her family will always be grateful for the way he stood beside her through everything.
Erin's faith was an important part of her life and her family's journey. Through the hardest days, they held tightly to their faith in God and His power to heal and carry them when they could not stand on their own.
Erin's life was short, but it was full of love, laughter, friendship, family, soccer, determination, and dreams. She taught those around her to love your people hard, live with passion, show up for the people you love, don't be afraid to be yourself, and make the most of the time you are given.
A celebration of Erin's life will be held on Sunday, October 11, from 1:00–4:00 p.m. at the Clyde Malting Building in Duluth. We hope everyone who loved Erin will join us in celebrating her life. Your presence, your memories, and your love for Erin will mean more to our family than you know.
Until then, hug your people a little tighter. Tell them you love them. Show up. Laugh. Play. Love fiercely.
And live life with the same passion Erin did.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the family for a scholarship that will be established in Erin's name.
