Our mother, Diane Westmoreland Golden, went home to be with her Savior, Jesus, on Thursday, August 7, 2025. She died peacefully at home, surrounded by family and friends giving her the love and kindness she had shown others her whole life. Deeply devoted to God, Mom believed that all living things were worthy of love and compassion. When our parents found a house for their expanding family, she made a promise to God that this house would be open to all in need. This promise was kept for 61 years. Young and old came, all being met with generous hospitality. She was eventually “Gramma” to everyone.
While raising eight children, she found time to be involved in Junior League, Bridge Club, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, many church activities, and volunteering wherever she could be helpful.
As soon as their last child was in school, Mom obtained an RN degree from Saint Luke’s Nursing School, where she later taught. She worked at Bayshore Residence and from there she became the Director of Nursing at Senior Friend, Inc. until her retirement in 2010.
Upon starting her job at Senior Friend, Dad said. “Hallelujah, now I can get a boat!” They cruised on the ”Celebration” with friends and family around Lake Superior for many years. One of mom’s many favorite activities was watching the 148th Fighter Wing and the Blue Angels fly.
Our mother was much more than that moniker suggests. She was a friend, a confidante, the person you called when ailing, or just needed some advice. Her gentle voice and loving kindness always gave comfort. She was an intelligent, determined, and sometimes stubborn woman, whose wry and witty humor brought lightness to any situation. “You have to laugh to make life worthwhile.”
Her legacy includes a sister, eight children and their spouses, 38 grandchildren and their spouses, and 52 great grandchildren.
Her death also reminds us of those we have lost before her: James Joseph Golden, H.E. and Dorothy Westmorland, Caitlyn Golden, and Mark Stokes.
