Barbara Thayer Butler, 89, of Duluth died peacefully Friday, March 11, 2022. Barbara was born in Duluth to Verna Thayer (Drenning) and Jorice Edward Brown. She was a graduate of Duluth Central High School and went on to receive a degree in Government and International Relations from Carleton College. Barbara worked for US Steel as a French Translator, where she met her future husband, John Butler. Barbara was a Girl Scout Troop Leader and later President of the Northern Pines Girl Scout Council. Barbara was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where she was a Lector, Chalice Bearer, Lay Eucharistic Minister, and member of the Vestry. Barbara felt a calling to become an ordained Deacon in the Episcopal Church and was ordained in 1987. For many years, she was active as a Deacon at St. Paul’s and was also a member of the Minnesota Episcopal Cursillo Community. Barbara was a member of PEO and the Kitchi Gammi Club. She was an avid reader and loved boating and camping. Most of all, she cherished spending time with her family.
Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, husband John T. Butler, and daughter Thayer A. Butler.
Barbara is survived by her daughters: Robin B. (Daniel) Edgerton, Rebecca T. Butler (Jeremy Laundergan), and Barbara B. (John) Bloom; grandchildren Scarlett, Erik, and Peter Korhonen; Angelique (Nathan) Dahlberg, Elisabeth and Alexander Edgerton; John and Michael Butler; and Christopher, Nicholas, and Anna Bloom; and great-grandchildren Silas, Killian, and Samuel.
VISITATION: 5 to 7 pm Friday in the Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. 2nd Str. Service will be held 11 am in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1710 E. Superior Street, Duluth followed by burial at Forest Hill Cemetery. Memorials preferred to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 218-727-3555.
