Florida

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Alice Elizabeth (Maris) Kubista who reunited with our Lord on May 29th, 2025. She passed away peacefully in the presence of her family and is now resting with Christ. Alice was born June 11th, 1936, in Philadelphia PA and was the daughter of Charles Emlen Maris Jr. & Mary Irene Ferrell Maris, and had one sister Eileen Maris Baumhogger. While being raised in Philadelphia, she attended Holy Child School, as well as the Covenant of the Sacred Heart at Eden Hall. Alice had a strong passion for music. Upon graduation from Eden Hall, she pursued her dreams of singing, traveling to Florence Italy to learn the Bel Conto technique of voice. Once completed, she continued to pursue her love of singing by attending the University of Pennsylvania, majoring in Voice at the School of Fine Arts. While at Penn, she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and Delta Omicron music society. She was recognized with Top Music Honors from Penn for her achievements in the School of Fine Arts.

After graduation, Alice worked at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital Library pursuing her Masters in Library Science. Working at the library, Alice met the love of her life, and her husband of 61 years, Theodore Paul Kubista. They fell in love and were married December 26th, 1963, in Philadelphia PA. Her husband studied medicine at the University Pennsylvania medical school. Upon completion, they moved to Rochester Minnesota for his residency at the Mayo Clinic and to start a family. While living in Rochester, they gave birth to their first son, Theodore Stephen Kubista. After finishing residency, they moved to Duluth Minnesota where her husband began his medical practice career. They welcomed their second child, Christian Gregory Kubista. While in Duluth, Alice was active in her community, again pursuing her passion for music. She was involved with and President of the Women’s Association of the Duluth Superior Orchestra (WADSO), President of Matinee Musical, Regional Chair for the Minnesota Opera, and member of the Medical Auxiliary where she was recognized as volunteer of the year. In Duluth, she was a big supporter of the local symphony and continued her love of singing by partaking in several opera productions. She was a member of Holy Rosary Church of Duluth Minnesota, where she sang in the chorus. When retirement came, Alice & Ted enjoyed traveling together seeing as much of the world as they could. They enjoyed trips to Japan, Czechia, Greece, Turkey, Russia, Korea, and many other places. For her it was a culmination on everything they created and built to go and enjoy the beauty of the of the world together.

Alice is survived by her husband Theodore Paul Kubista, sons Ted & Christian Kubista, daughter-in laws Nanako Kubista and Stefanie Kubista, her five grandchildren Alicia, Teddy, Gregory, Ethan, Caitlyn, and her niece Celia Baumhogger Pregizer. She will be remembered as a person of strong faith, dedicated wife, devoted to her children, and living with a servant’s heart. Her joy in life was falling in love with her husband and building a life together, raising her two sons, and watching her 5 grandchildren grow and become the people they are today. May she rest in peace.
