Bonnie Schilling, age 87, a lifetime Duluth, MN resident, died on September 24th surrounded by her family. She enjoyed a long, active healthy life until suffering a stroke shortly before her death.
Bonnie was born to Noah and Agnes Young on June 5, 1930. She had four brothers (James, David, Thomas, and Joe) who preceded her in death and one sister, Nancy, who resides in Seattle. After graduating from Duluth Central High School in 1947, she worked as a legal secretary until becoming a full-time homemaker. She married John (Jack) Schilling on September 27, 1952, and they had four children: Karen (Steve Schroer), Donna, Nancy (Tom Clemens), and James (Lisa) and six grandchildren – Alexander and Peter Schroer, Daniel and Laura Clemens, and Zoey and Max Schilling.
Bonnie was an active lifelong member of Glen Avon Presbyterian Church and loved her church family second to her immediate family. She participated in many church activities including women’s groups, book club, bible study, and serving as a deacon. She loved sewing, quilting, knitting, embroidery, and was a member of the Needle Art Guild. She also enjoyed cooking and baking, her flower gardens, hockey games, crossword puzzles and games. She loved learning and books and attended University for Seniors. She was known as the “zipper lady” as Northwoods Children’s Home. She enjoyed music, dancing and travel. She always had a smile, enjoyed a good laugh, and is widely remembered as a kind and sweet lady.
Visitation will be from 5 PM to 7 PM on October 13th at Dougherty Funeral Home 600 E 2nd Street, Duluth, MN 55805. A Celebration of Bonnie’s Life will be at Glen Avon Presbyterian Church, 2105 Woodland Ave, Duluth, MN 55812 on October 14th (visitation at 10, service at 11). In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred and will be forwarded to Glen Avon Church.
