Ronald W. Nelson, 79, Duluth resident, died peacefully, Monday, May 8, 2017 surrounded by his family at Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, MN following a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s and kidney disease.
He was born on July 17, 1937 in Duluth, MN to Walter and Margaret (Olson) Nelson.
Ronald served his country in the United States Army Reserves.
He married Darilyn Lammo and they raised three children together.
He was employed as a carpenter for many years and a fifty-year patch gold member of the Regional Council of Carpenters. Ronald later retired from the Independent School District 709 of Duluth where he was a locksmith.
He fished with his kids on Little Grand Lake, and his son Mark was his hunting partner. He later took on golfing and enjoyed golfing with family and his golf buddies. Ron loved collecting old classic cars and was a member of the Vintage Times. He enjoyed car shows and community events relating to classic cars. He took pleasure in coffee and conversation with the guys at LA’s Restaurant or at Sherie & Greg’s house on the weekends, and most of all, spoiling his grandchildren.
Ronald is survived by one daughter, Sherene “Sherie” (Greg) Johnson, Duluth, MN; two sons, Scott (Dayle) Nelson, Duluth, MN and Mark Nelson, Hermantown, MN; six grandchildren, Kelsey (Rob) Swanstrom, Esko, MN, Samantha (Darrin) Arnold, Madison, WI, Alexander Nelson and Margaret Rose “Greta” Nelson, both of Duluth, MN, Carter Nelson and Jared Nelson, both of Hermantown, MN and his former wife and mother if his children, Darilyn Lammo of Saginaw, MN and a friend Diane Spear.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister Carol Margaret.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Spirit Valley Dialysis and Solvay Hospice House for his most recent care.
Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 East 2nd Street, Duluth MN and continue until the 2:00 PM memorial service with Pastor Dan Holm officiating.
The Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, 1209 E. 5th Street, Superior is assisting the family with arrangements.
